The 2018 Round-Up 24 Celeb Couples Who Called It Quits (+ 2 Who Got Back Together)
27
"Thank U, Next" isn't just a song. It's now a phrase. Ariana Grande's sudden split from Pete Davidson might have dominated the final months of 2018, but she wasn't the only one calling it quits. While this year has brought us #CouplesGoals like Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas (and Justin Beiber and Hailey Baldwin), not everyone came with a #MeantToBe.
Celebrities seem to have a way of splitting up way faster than us normies. Britney Spears was married to Jason Alexander for a total 55 hours. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries lasted longer, with 72 days.
For some reason, it's always at the end of December (and beginning of January) that the wave of breakups hits the Internet. While we watched these celebs call it quits over the last 12 months, it's only at the end of the year that it really hits us.
While whirlwind love seemed to work out for the Biebs, it hasn't come with a #Success for everyone. Selena Gomez? Single. Jennifer Aniston? Also single. Niall Horan? Likewise.
It's time for the round-up. Whether they were mismatched, seemingly perfect for one another or somebody was a little bit naughty, it didn't last for 24 of these 26 couples. Here are 2018's "Thank, U Next," plus two who changed their minds and are #BackOn.
26 Ariana Grande & Pete Davidson: Engaged After Just 24 Days, "Thank U, Next"
After just 24 days of dating, Ariana Grande announced her engagement to Pete Davidson in the summer of 2018. The girl who loves clouds found herself in a whirlwind romance (but there was no silver lining).
"I'm 100% marrying him" turned into "Thank U, Next" in the blink of an eye. The only work left in this relationship? Removing all those matching tattoos.
Ari and Pete split in 2018. "For somebody who claims to hate relevancy u sure love clinging to it" was Ari's cryptic IG message to Pete after the split, People reports.
25 Selena Gomez & Justin Bieber: With Justin Marrying Hailey Baldwin, It Feels Like Forever Ago
Justin Bieber's 2018 will mostly be remembered for his #FastestEver marriage to Hailey Baldwin. As these two frolick the streets in an ever-continuing carousel of love, it's pretty easy to forget that 2018 also came with a major Biebs breakup.
Around 10 years of "on-off" seems to have ended in the biggest #OffForever for Selena Gomez and Justin (who finally called it quits in 2018). Selena went to take time for herself (although check out the recent pics of her- she looks sensational).
24 Jennifer Aniston & Justin Theroux: Will It Ever Work Out For This Girl?
People have a pretty good way of poking their noses into Jennifer Aniston's private life. After Angelina Jolie took over the Brad Pitt side of things in 2005, Jen dated a string of guys, including Vince Vaughn and John Mayer. In 2016, Jen married Justin Theroux. In 2018, they're #Over.
#NoLuck with Brad Pitt. #NoLuck with Justin Theroux. Jen turns 50 in 2019. (We wouldn't turn her down).
"Mutual and lovingly made" is the word on their decision, according to Harper's Bazaar.
23 Kourtney Kardashian & Younes Bendjima: This Girl Moves On Fast, Though
To be fair, most of us were wondering if 39-year-old Kourtney Kardashian was going to make it with 24-year-old Younes Bendjima. With Scott Disick in her life forever, things were never going to be simple for Kourt.
Kourtney dated Younes for approximately two years before calling it quits in 2018. Younes getting cozy with model Jordan Ozuna was what seems to have broken them up, E! News reports. Kourt has moved on, though. Who with? An even younger guy. Her current beau, Luka Sabbat, is 21.
22 Cardi B & Offset: Baby Kulture Arrived, But These Two Didn't Last Long
Cardi B doesn't keep stuff a secret. Her Instagram is 80% "stories about my life" videos, but one in particular took us by surprise. After just one year of marriage, Cardi announced her split from Offset at the end of 2018.
"It's nobody's fault, it's just like, I guess we grew out of love but we are not together anymore," Cardi said, as Cosmopolitan reports. Baby Kulture will be raised by parents who are apart (although she isn't missing out on the love).
21 Lucy Hale & Riley Smith: It Wasn't A "Life Sentence" For This Pretty Little Liar
It's always cute when co-stars date. Cue us being mega bummed that Riverdale co-stars Lucy Hale and Riley Smith have called time on their relationship. The Life Sentence and Pretty Little Liars actress was first linked to Riley after the media spotted them celebrating Valentine's Day 2018 together.
While there were romantic Hawaii vacation pics and some social media #Swooning (that's since gone), these two parted ways before the year was through. Nicki Swift reports that Smith is moving to Chicago to film a new show.
20 Gigi Hadid & Zayn Malik: #Split, But Back "Stronger Than Ever"
Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik were so meant to be. In 2016, this supermodel fell head over heels for former One Direction star, Zayn Malik. They decorated gingerbread houses for Christmas. "lol ur not zayn malik" were Gigi's 2016 tees. Then came the split.
Everyone's reaction when they split: "Nooooooo!" Everyone's reaction now? Biggest #FeelGood ever.
In October 2018, Gigi and Zayn updated their Instagram accounts to confirm that they're back on. "More loved up than ever" is how Capital FM puts the relationship status. We'll take that.
19 Paris Hilton & Chris Zylka: She's Keeping The $2 Million Ring
You don't propose to Paris Hilton without one heck of a ring. Then again, don't expect to get it back if the engagement falls through. Elite Daily reports that Paris is keeping the absolute rock of a $2 million diamond ring that was supposed to seal a future marriage between these two.
The proposal pic was beyond cute. At 37 years old, Paris is once again single, but Chris wants the ring back. No kidding.
18 Halsey & G-Eazy: Not As Easy As It Seemed
Halsey has more than got her career under control. Her love life? Seems less easy. After a year of dating, E! News reported that Halsey and G-Eazy were calling it quits.
"I normally keep this kind of thing private but provided our public nature, I feel I need to inform my fans," Halsey told the news outlet. The singer is "focusing on her tour, her art, and her career" (but she does "want the best" for her ex).
But now it seems they're trying to patch things up. A source told the news outlet that they've been in touch since breaking up and are on good terms, but not fully back together.
17 Derek Peth & Taylor Nolan: More "Bachelor," Less "Paradise"
Bachelor Nation might have worked for the likes of Sean Lowe, the Talbots and Becca Kufrin. Bachelor in Paradise did bring some happiness for Derek Peth and Taylor Nolan, but it's proving to be paradise lost.
"We put everything into our relationship and are heartbroken to go forward separately, but we know this is the best decision for the both of us," was the joint June 2018 statement to E! News from this couple. Dang, we'll miss those selfies.
16 Liam Payne & Cheryl Cole: She Was 10 Years Older, But They've Got Their Baby, Bear
Cheryl Cole had her eye on Liam Payne from the moment he first auditioned on the UK X Factor (like, a zillion years ago). Take it from someone who watched it live- she was smitten. Cheryl is 10 years older than Liam. Their relationship seemed steady, even bringing them a baby boy named Bear.
In July 2018, Liam tweeted that they were going their separate ways. "It's been a tough decision for us to make," was Liam's tweet, as Her reports.
15 Brooklyn Beckham & Chloe Grace Moretz: Chloe Wasn't A Fan Of Seeing His New Romance Everywhere
Celeb kids grow up. Victoria and David Beckham's son, Brooklyn, is now an A-Lister in his own right. He dated the beautiful Chloe Grace Moretz until around the middle of 2018, when the breakup appeared to take a sour turn.
"I'm not a big fan of PDA in general. I personally don't want to see people posted all over my phone making out."
Speaking to The Sunday Times Magazine, Chloe made it clear that Brooklyn's new romance with Canadian model Lexi Wood wasn't well-received, as Just Jared reports.
14 Elon Musk & Amber Heard: A Little Mismatched, Done And Dusted
Elon Musk isn't the first guy we'd have picked for Amber Heard, but the heart wants what it wants. "I was really in love," Entertainment Tonight reports Elon saying following this couple's February 2018 split. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO started dating Amber in 2016, but even a billionaire can't guarantee it'll last.
"She broke up with me more than I broke up with her, I think", Elon told Rolling Stone.
13 Shawn Booth & Kaitlyn Bristowe: The Dog Will "Remain In Her Life"
Another Bachelorette couple, another Bachelorette split. Kaitlyn Bristowe is said to be "mending a broken heart" by Inquisitr following her 2018 split from Shawn Booth.
"Thankful memories with the Dood. No pup will ever compare," was Kaitlyn's caption to an IG pic of Shawn's golden retriever. She has confirmed that the dog will "forever" be in her life (although Shawn is kinda outta the picture now). She called the dog "the glue to our relationship."
12 Jenna Dewan & Channing Tatum: We'll Miss These Two So Bad
With Hollywood marriages seeming to have an average shelf life of one year, these two did pretty well. Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum were married for nine years before their 2018 split. Honestly, we're not 100% sure we'll ever get over this one.
"There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision- just two best friends realizing it's time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible" was the couple's joint Instagram statement, as E! News reports.
11 Nicki Minaj & Nas: Didn't Diss Him On "Barbie Dreams," #Respect
Nicki Minaj might throw out the diss lists like nobody's business, but this girl can hold back when she needs to.
Nicki and Nas called it quits in January 2018. TMZ reports "distance" as contributing towards their split. Nicki? She's moved on and is now dating Kenneth Petty. He comes with, um, some controversy.
10 Ben Affleck & Lindsay Shookus: Too Many Challenges
Remember when Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were #Bennifer? #Lennifer never really took off with Lindsay Shookus, although this couple of one year have still left us #Shookup following their 2018 split.
"It was very hard for her to break up with Ben, but she knew he wasn't getting better and that it was time for her to step aside,"
a source told People. Ben Affleck's high-profile personal troubles made major headlines this year. Honestly, we just wish this guy all the best.
9 Blac Chyna & YBN Almighty: She's 12 Years Older, Known For Being A Bit Of A Challenge
You only need to have watched five minutes of Rob & Chyna (now cancelled) to know that Blac Chyna comes as a teeny tiny #Handful. The model and social media influencer has a son with Tyga and a baby girl with Rob Kardashian. YBN Almighty was Chyna's 2018 guy.
A "Will You Marry Me?" tweet from YBN seemed a little premature, and yes, "@blacchyna and I are no longer together" followed, People reports. Chyna is 12 years older than the rapper. Probably not meant to be.
8 Bella Hadid & The Weeknd: Looks Like It's Back On
Sometimes, a supermodel is just too irresistible. Given that most of us have the biggest ever #GirlCrush on Bella Hadid, we're not surprised that The Weeknd is giving it another go with her. Seventeen reports that these two are finally back together (although the pic kind of does the talking).
After this couple's 2016 split, The Weeknd dated Selena Gomez. After E! News spotted the rapper leaving Bella's apartment in NYC, Selena broke it off. The result? Looks like these two are all set.
7 Ruby Rose & Jess Origliasso: Single Is The New Black
It might be lock-up for Ruby Rose on the set of Orange Is The New Black, but when it comes to relationships, broken up is the reality. Ruby Rose had been dating The Veronica's Jess Origliasso in the cutest ever series of Instagram pics (that are no more).
In April 2018, these two called it quits. Ruby took to Twitter to announced the end of the "past two years learning and sharing my life with an amazing human being," as Daily Edge reports.
6 Lena Dunham & Jack Antonoff: Split After 5 Years, Made Us Super Sad
When a couple has been together for five years (a.k.a. forever in Hollywood), a split is going to sting every single fan. Girls creator Lena Dunham had been with musician Jack Antonoff for nearly half a decade before the 2018 news came that it was #Over.
"Jack and Lena were growing apart and it just made sense for them to end the relationship where it was," E! News reported a source as saying.
5 JWoww & Roger Mathews: Now Co-Parenting In A Different Kind Of "Family Vacation"
Jersey Shore cast members have done the biggest 180 ever. Snooki put her party days behind her to become a full-time mom, and we saw similar from Jenni "Jwoww" Farley. In September 2018, JWoww and Roger Mathews cited "irreconcilable differences" for a divorce, following six months of separation.
Roger publicly took to Instagram to admit that less-than-faithful behavior was the reason for the split. Credit for speaking up. While he vowed to "win my wife back," we've yet to see these two get back together.
4 Sam Smith & Brandon Flynn: Deleted All Their Social Pics, #OfficiallyOver
It's official. Sam Smith and his 13 Reasons Why boyfriend Brandon Flynn are no more. The Sun covered their nine-month relationship (and its June 2018 end date). The breakup rumours started when Sam deleted the couple's Instagram pics.
"Sam is obviously devastated. This is the most significant relationship he's ever had."
The source indeed suggests that this is a tough one for Sam. It's said that they were just "too busy" for each other, as Metro reports. Enough with the celebs having no time to date! We'll miss these two.
3 Scott Disick & Sofia Richie: A Brief #Hiccup Rumour
KUWTK viewers will be more than familiar with Kourtney Kardashian's fury at Scott introducing the kids to Sofia Richie against her wishes (and the instructions of their therapist). In what appears to be his first solid relationship since Kourt, Scott is going steady with Sofia.
Cosmopolitan reported a brief 2018 blip in the relationship- Scott was spotted with an "unidentified woman." The couple seems to have shrugged off the rumours. They're solidly together (despite the 15-year age gap).
2 Emma Watson & Chord Overstreet: Officially Split In June 2018, Spotted Looking Cozy, #Hope?
Emma Watson is pretty private in general. She isn't a fan of taking selfies with fans, and having the press poke around her personal life isn't her jam. Emma's relationship with Glee star Chord Overstreet seemed to be going strong, but People reports that it was "never going to be a long-term thing."
Their May 2018 split was confirmed by the media outlet. One month later, Elle reported them "sharing a kiss." The official statement seems to be #Split, but is there #Hope?
1 Pete Davidson & Cazzie David: Yeah, You'd Forgotten About That One, Hadn't You…
Oh, yes. Pete Davidson didn't just have one major split in 2018. While Pete's engagement to Ariana Grande dominated headlines, let's not forget that Pete had already gone through a 2018 breakup before dating Ari. In May 2018, Pete confirmed his split from Larry David's daughter to Open Late with Peter Rosenberg, as Hello Giggles reports.
"Very talented girl," Pete called Cazzie. It seemed to be #QuicklyForgotten as Pete embarked on his whirlwind romance with Ariana. Then again, that one didn't last. Pete's worrying social media post in December 2018 saw Ariana Grande rush to his side. We're still wondering about those two.
