Royal Side-Eye 15 Bizarre Expressions Caught During The Wedding Ceremony

It was one of the most anticipated events of the year (heck, of the decade): the wedding of the youngest Prince of Wales, Harry, and American actress Meghan Markle. Anyone who has ever been a fan of fairy tale endings has been following the courtship of the two young loves since they were first spotted together. The couple had been paired up on a blind date years ago and when it was announced that they were dating, some people raised their eyebrows since Meghan had been previously married before. Those naysayers were quickly disregarded when it was clear how in love the two genuinely are.

A few months ago, to really no one's surprise, Kensington Palace announced the couple's engagement and suddenly, the entire world appeared to be on pins and needles, waiting for the big day to arrive. And when it finally did, the wedding managed to beat Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding ratings-wise (at least in America, since Meghan is American). The ceremony didn't disappoint either. There were tons of beautiful moments, especially Bishop Michael Curry's sermon, which people fell in love with.

The day also provided viewers with some hilarious expressions (and hilarious reactions) of the Royal Crown. Here are some of the most bizarre facial expressions that were caught on camera.

15 The Side-Eye Seen Around The World

Now, let's be honest here: we all know that it's likely that Kate Middleton was just caught swiftly on camera looking one way before turning her entire head to address her husband's step-mother, Camilla Parker Bowles. However, since she was caught doing a “side-eye” to her step-mother-in-law, people naturally jumped to conclusions, even professional human behavioral experts.

“We typically don't see such serious and stern behavior from Kate,” Susan Constantine, a body language expert, told Good Housekeeping. “This gesture - smirked eyes and turned down mouth - was a rather dignified way to reprimand Camilla.”

People had pointed out that when Kate made the facial expression, it was during Bishop Michael Curry's sermon and that it was possible that some people had caught Camilla smirking.

Twitter, naturally, blew up at catching the Royal “side-eye”: “Did anyone else catch the epic 'keep it together' side eye from Kate to Camilla?? #RoyalWedding” user @arthurthomas6 tweeted out.

“Did anyone just see Kate's side eye?! Was Camilla laughing? Amazing #royalwedding” @LucyThack said.

Whatever really happened, we all know we'll never find out the answer. The Palace is a secretive place and doesn't really like gossip flying about. Truth be told, what went on in our heads is probably way more exciting than what went down in real life.

14 The "What Is He Saying?" English Facial Notes

The internet was primarily responsible for zooming in on Zara Phillips' reaction to Rev Curry's address on love. Phillips is the only daughter of Princess Anne and she was caught, on camera, with her mouth open as she listened to the Bishop. At some points, she appeared to either not know what he was saying, or simply just listening inattentively like many of the guests were because the sermon itself was extremely fiery and emotional. As Twitter pointed out, the English really aren't used to outright emotions displayed in a public venue, especially not as public as a Royal wedding.

“Zara Phillips, perfectly encapsulating the British look of horror whenever someone expresses an emotion,” Twitter user @jules_lefevre tweeted out, as reported by PopCulture. “I'm thinking that Zara Phillips is a little taken aback by this address. #BritishReactions #RoyalWedding".

Phillips is a popular equestrian and even won the Eventing World Championship in Aachen back in 2006. By a young age, Phillips had already become one of the more popular Royals in the family since she won BBC Sports Personality of the Year (2006) and was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2007. She even won a silver medal in equestrian at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She is also seventeenth in the line of succession to the British throne.

13 The Infamous Ex-Girlfriend And Her "It Should Be Me" Face

Some people would never even dream of inviting their ex to their wedding, and those who do could be seen as “petty” or “spiteful.” But Prince Harry isn't one of those people. He and Chelsy Davy, who dated on and off for seven years, until they finally broke it off officially in 2010, are said to still be “close friends.” So, of course, she was invited to the Royal wedding! But, like most people who made more than one facial expression at the wedding, Davy's facial expressions during the wedding went viral and Twitter basically exploded.

What people didn't know was that Davy and Prince Harry actually had a tearful phone conversation that took place days before the wedding, according to Vanity Fair and insiders.

As reported by Nicki Swift: “It was their final call, a parting call in which they both acknowledged Harry was moving on. Chelsy was quite emotional about it all, she was in tears and almost didn't go to the wedding,” one particular insider said. “In the end, she went and promised Harry she wouldn't try and gatecrash the party.”

As most know, Davy was invited to the ceremony but wasn't invited to the private reception at Frogmore House that followed. Though that part isn't as dramatic as people made it out to be since the two are still, and always will be, good friends.

    12 Soooooo Excited

If there was one person who had a heck of a time at the Royal wedding other than either the Duke and new Duchess, it was the little page boy who was briefly seen standing behind Meghan before she walked down the aisle. Time reports that the excited and jubilant boy was Brian Mulroney, one of the twin sons of Jessica Mulroney, and his tiny little happy face went viral. He was basically showing what the rest of us were feeling about the Royal moment finally arriving.

“My face was just like that little boy too when the music started,” @ThomasARoberts tweeted.

“Here comes the bride. Love that I've caught the Page Boy's expression (quite by chance) #HarryandMeghan #RoyalWedding” @JulieAnn1972 said.

“The page boy behind Meghan = MY NEW FAVORITE. He is ALL OF US #RoyalWedding” @tweetdeguerre tweeted out into the world.

All the little flower girls and page boys were children of the Royal family and/or close friends. Jessica Mulroney is the close friend of Meghan's who is a fashion stylist in Canada (her twin boys and her young daughter were in the wedding party - her daughter was a flower girl). Both she and her husband were special guests of the Royal couple, and Jessica was often seen paling around with her now Royal bestie before Meghan became engaged to Prince Harry.

    11 Couldn't Contain Their Smiles

We saw a lot of very touching and beautiful moments during the Royal wedding this past weekend, but we all have to admit we were completely enamored with Prince Charles and his wife Camilla's love for each other that they managed to express subtly during the ceremony. When Charles took his seat next to the Duchess of Cornwall, you can see both of them sharing a large smile. The Prince of Wales walked Meghan down the aisle after her own father had suffered a heart attack and had to pull out of the wedding.

Later on, after the service, Charles walked with Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, on one arm, and with Camilla on his other arm, out of the church.

It was charming watching the Prince walk his future-daughter-in-law down the aisle and then hand her off to his youngest son, who adorably, said: “Thank you, Pa”.

Throughout the service, Charles and Camilla could be seen smiling at each other and sharing a subtle side and quiet conversation with each other. The couple has come a long way since the days of the world choosing to shun Camilla when Charles ended up divorcing his first wife, Diana Spencer, Prince William and Harry's mother who was tragically killed in 1997.

10 "You're Hearing This Too, Right?"

Okay, so as we've seen and read when it comes to the Royal wedding that the British are used to doing things a certain way, but that didn't downplay how amusing some of their expressions were during the Royal wedding. Now, we're sure, that if we were filmed at a wedding and our faces were displayed for the world to see, we too would be caught making some interesting facial expressions.

Take Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie who were seated with their family at St. George's Chapel during the ceremony. Every now and then, you'd catch Beatrice and Eugenie raising their eyebrows and casting sideways looks to their seatmates during the event.

“Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice kicked off the perplexed expressions, exchanging glances and raised eyebrows with one another,” a writer with Access reported. “Princess Beatrice stole the show when she looked right up from her program and up at the Reverend as he opened with a quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. from his 1967 “Where Do We Go From Here?” sermon.”

The article then went on to say “The untraditional sermon was the perfect addition to a typically beyond-traditional ceremony done for the most Royal wedding.”

We have to agree that it was beyond perfect as well. Plus, Twitter got to see some pretty amusing, and happy, reactions.

    9 Breaking With Tradition

The Royal wedding between Harry and Meghan was one of the most watched events in television history, and with good reason. But it also broke tradition with Bishop Michael Curry's sermon, which was impassionate and powerful and people all around the world were feeling the love. Usually, most of the addresses given at Royal weddings were from “senior members of the Church of England” so it's no big shock that some of the British guests attending the wedding were, well, a bit shocked.

The thing is, according to Teen Vogue, that their own shock was easy to read on their faces and Twitter was all for it (especially since Americans had to get up bright and early to catch the wedding on television (well, not so bright for the west coast since the wedding kicked off at four in the morning).

Curry certainly made a powerful impact on everyone in attendance - he made them laugh, he made them well up with emotion, he made them think.

But, more importantly, he gave us a simple glance at how the British take in something that breaks from their normal tradition, and, quite frankly, we applaud him for it. I mean, just look at some of these expressions! They experienced something they'll truly never forget.

8 Hilarious Trouble With The Veil

There are so many things that can go absolutely toe-up during a wedding. This is why you usually hire a wedding planner so you can be prepared for a misstep at any given moment. But then there are the moments that you think you have tied down, but then fly away from you in a single second. Take this hilarious mishap that happened to Meghan and Harry when he attempted to lift her veil. Needless to say, it was a tad confusing for the young prince.

When he first lifted it, it seemed like he was attempting to peel an onion, which confused him because all he seemed to do was find another veil under it, as reported by Cosmopolitan.

Okay, we all expressed awe at the beauty of the veil itself (and how it was a tribute to his late mother, who wore a similar epically long veil during her own wedding) and the marveled at its intricate beading detail, but we had to know that Harry was going to have an issue with that sucker once Meghan made it to the head of the altar. Of course, the prince eventually did get the veil successfully over her head and was able to see her face, which was just plain charming to those of us watching. As far as mishaps go this was definitely one of the more adorable ones.

7 Don't Think That Was Supposed To Be A Funny Moment, David

He's one of the most handsome men on the planet, and when viewers caught a bunch of handful of shots of former soccer superstar David Beckham and his beautiful wife Victoria Beckham, they released a plethora of adoring tweets talking about how gorgeous the couple was (especially how gorgeous David appeared to be). “It was such a beautiful, incredible wedding,” Victoria said during an interview to Evening Standard. “It was the best day. They looked so happy, and everybody was just so happy for them. Meghan seems like a genuinely lovely woman, who really loves him. It felt very real, very honest.”

It's not odd to see David and his wife present at any Royal function (they were in attendance at Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding) since he and both princes go back a long way.

When asked by Esquire if he considers himself a friend of the Royal brothers, Beckham simply nodded.

“Yeah, I think I would,” he said. “We've done a lot of functions together. It's a very normal relationship. With Harry, as well. They're very easy to get along with.” Like a lot of the other Royal guests, David seemed to be caught off guard by breaking from British tradition during the wedding, but it didn't mean he didn't enjoy it. Plus, everyone could use a good picture of a handsome man smiling widely.

6 Wondering If They Ever Smile? Keep Wondering (Look At Prince William, Though)

Queen Elizabeth has always been known for her no-nonsense ways along with her curious, and adoring, sense of humor. She's been known to express her sense of humor at random times, but when it comes to family (especially her grandsons) it's all love and some business, which explains her stern facial expression during the sermon. While most of her famous British relatives had their expressions crack a tad during Curry's jubilant address, the Queen herself wore her infamous serious face.

“People forget that the Queen was very interested in, and listened to, Billy Graham,” Dominic Reid, also a guest at the wedding, told People magazine. “It was not as new as people think. Maybe it was not what people were expecting, but everyone listened and everybody was absolutely behind it.”

Reid described Curry as “fabulous” and only spoke highly about his address, according to People. “It had power and energy, and it really addressed them as individuals within the context of something that's formal.”

“The message was bang on - the world needs more love and none of us can possibly counter that view.” Especially the Queen, who loves her family with all her heart, even if she wears that stern expression half the time.

5 Princess Charlotte Making It All Better

She certainly has stolen the world's heart from the very moment she was born and presented to the press a few short hours later. And the darling three-year-old seemed to steal the show at her uncle's wedding where she was the flower girl. People seemed to notice one small facial gesture she made while leaving the wedding in a car. She turned to look at the passing faces and clicking cameras as she was leaving and stuck out her tongue in an adorable fashion. People said that she was the spitting image of her uncle when he made the same exact facial expression to photographers when he was in a car back in 1987.

The press went on to say that Harry was exactly like that when he was younger - he was just as cheeky with the press as his young niece is now.

William, being the oldest and the direct heir, had to have more poise than his baby brother and often didn't play around with the press as much. But Harry, nah. Harry had his fun, much like Charlotte does now. Sure, she might change the older she gets, but right now, we're just appreciating how cheeky and cute she is at this age.

4 Can't Contain Their Laughter (Or Happiness)

There were so many tender moments that the newly married couple let the world witness - both at the wedding and during all the rest of their outings in front of the press. When Meghan made it up to the altar to join Harry, he could be seen saying the words “You look amazing, I'm so lucky” to her. During Curry's sermon, the couple could be seen grasping hands and staring at each other intensely. It's more than clear that the couple is very much in love. They've actually been sharing moments from this from the very start of their courtship, according to Elle. Remember when the press caught them sharing private jokes and kisses at Serena William's tennis match? Or when they couldn't stop smiling at each other during their Scotland trip? Or when they met the public in Wales?

Every outing where we see the couple engaging with others, they always seem to be aware of each other despite the physical distance between the two. They're constantly looking at each other and finding ways to wiggle back within touching distance of each other to at least hold hands or link arms with one another.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that they were sharing some of these tender happenings in front of the world during the wedding.

3 Sir Elton Just Being Sir Elton

He's been a notable figure at any Royal function. Back in the day, Sir Elton John was extremely close to Princess Diana when she was alive. He was notably devastated when she lost her life in the Paris car crash caused by the paparazzi and it showed when he performed the updated version of “Candle in the Wind” at her funeral. He re-wrote the song in order to cope with his grief and her sons were extremely moved as they dealt with their own grief.

The Grammy award-winning singer has been a guest of the Royal family at almost every function, including the weddings of both of Diana's sons.

Not only did Elton and David Furnish attend the wedding, but they were also invited to the private reception that only a select few got invited to. As told by People, he even performed at the reception! It was said that Harry personally asked his mother's good friend to perform, which he gladly obliged.

“Sir Elton John has performed at the Lunchtime Reception for guests celebrating the Wedding of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle,” Kensington Palace said in a statement, according to The Telegraph. “Prince Harry asked Sir Elton to perform at the Reception which was hosted by Her Majesty The Queen at St George's Hall, Windsor Castle. Sir Elton performed for the newly married couple in recognition of the close connection he has with Prince Harry and his family.”

2 Pretty Sure It's Time For George's Nap

It's a given: at usually any long function where you are forced to put on formal wear and parade around, any child under the age of ten is likely to get grouchy and/or sleepy. Just take a look at Prince George here, the eldest son of William and Kate. Sure, he looks cute as heck, but he also looks like he's had a vividly long day (even if it was only the early afternoon at the time the picture was taken) and is ready for a nap.

Though, apparently, the young prince did more than just handle his pageboy duties. He also reportedly comforted the youngest member of the bridal party - the two-year-old Zalie Warren, who is Harry's goddaughter and started crying at the beginning of the ceremony.

“Poor Zalie Warren had a bit of a meltdown,” Emily Andrews, a Royal correspondent, said during a podcast about the wedding. According to Inquisitr, Andrews went on: “She's only two. She started crying when they were waiting for Meghan. It was only a couple of minutes. So Nanny Maria Borrallo kind of looked after her, and George apparently was trying to comfort her as well, which is very sweet.”

Way to step up and go above and beyond, young prince.

    1 … Ditto With Charlotte

Much like her older brother, Charlotte was up to the task of helping out when needed at the beginning of the wedding. Apparently, aside from making cute faces and gestures to the adoring press, Charlotte also managed to take charge of a situation where she wasn't asked to take charge. The young princess made herself in charge of the other bridesmaids and told them when to go and when to hold still.

“There was one girl who wanted to go and she said, 'No you can't go yet, We have to wait until we are asked,” one of the guests told People magazine. “She was really organized!”

A majority of the Royal family are taught how to be organized and take charge from day one, so it really isn't too surprising that Charlotte already has her head on firmly, even at the delicate age of three.

After the wedding, the two Royal siblings had to be exhausted but rarely showed it as they gathered in the vehicles and were whisked away to the later receptions (and hopefully for a quick nap). They even waved excitedly to the press and thousands of people gathered along the route.
