20 Behind-The-Scenes Secrets From 'Suits' Even Superfans Might Have Missed

When Suits first debuted, people quickly became obsessed with the new legal drama. Sure, there've been countless legal dramas on the air before - people love seeing high-stakes drama set in a high-powered legal firm. However, Suits took things to a whole new level, packing the show with a compelling cast that we couldn't get enough of.

Harvey Specter was a total boss and Jessica Pearson was proof that a woman could rise to the top and take charge. Mike's story about essentially lying his way into becoming a lawyer was a fascinating storyline to watch unravel over the show's seasons. And then, of course, there's Donna, who added a little spice to every episode (as well as her fair share of heartfelt moments). There's legal drama revolving around their cases, there's drama surrounding the structure of the firm and who's in charge at any given moment, and then, of course, there's all the romantic tension and relationship drama. Suffice it to say, there's never a dull moment.

So, whether you're a die-hard fan of the show or the series is one that you've been meaning to watch for ages, here are 20 things you may not know about Suits.

20 Gabriel Macht (Harvey) And Sarah Rafferty (Donna) Are Close Friends In Real Life

Harvey and Donna are easily one of our favorite parts of the show. There's just something about their rapport and the way they play off one another that's a pleasure to watch.

And, while some of it comes from the fact that Gabriel Macht and Sarah Rafferty are both skilled at what they do, part of it is that they're actually really close friends.

As Macht spilled to Blast, "we are really, really, really close friends. We've been to each other's weddings… our daughters are best friends, so we lived in the same house [while shooting the show in Toronto]."

19 Patrick J. Adams Got The Role Because Of His Eyes

When Patrick J. Adams got the role of Mike Ross, he wasn't quite a household name yet. Sure, he had some roles under his belt, but he certainly wasn't an A-Lister yet. The show could have easily gone with a more recognizable name to try to get some star power behind it, but Adams ultimately won out because of one distinctive feature - his eyes. Apparently, creator Aaron Korsh was immediately drawn to him because his eyes had a certain intelligence that just made you believe he really was a crazy brainiac with a photographic memory. We couldn't imagine Mike Ross being played by anyone else.

18 Viewers Never Get To See Louis' Infamous Assistant, Norma

We have to hand it to Rick Hoffman, who plays the role of Louis Litt. He somehow manages to make us love him and hate him all at the same time. And, besides his love of his cats, one of the things we know best about him is his relationship with his assistant, Norma - or rather, his lack of relationship.

While Donna and Harvey are the dream team, Louis and Norma aren't quite as pro together.

However, did you know that throughout the show, though Louis talks to Norma quite frequently, we never actually get the chance to see her on screen?

17 Meghan Is A Foodie In Real Life

All of the characters are used to getting dressed up and going for dinner in luxe places, because that's the kind of lifestyle they lead, whether in their private time or when they're taking out clients. However, there's one in particular who knows the ins and outs of restaurants because she's a major foodie - Rachel Zane.

It turns out that particular facet of Rachel's character came about because Meghan herself is a total foodie and the writers included that in her character. While we're happy she found love in real life, we have to admit - we're going to miss her Instagram account, where she posted pictures of all her foodie adventures.

16 Louis' Order Of The Coif Test For Harvard Knowledge Is Actually Wrong

One of the ways that Louis tries to prove Mike is a fake is by bringing up the Order of the Coif. It seems like something that could be an actual Harvard tradition incorporated on the show, but in actuality, Harvard doesn't have an Order of the Coif.

So, while it plays out as major drama due to the potential that Mike may get discovered on the show, in reality, Mike not knowing about that wouldn't have anything to do with him going or not going to Harvard.

Plus, as an added tidbit, Louis actually mispronounces the word entirely - while the French pronunciation may seem right, lawyers actually pronounce it "koyf" in that context.

15 The New York City Skyline Is Actually A Giant Shower Curtain

Most superfans will know that the show doesn't actually film in New York City, nor does it film entirely on a soundstage in Los Angeles. The show is actually filmed in the Canadian metropolis of Toronto. So, how do they get that incredible NYC skyline in the background at the office? Adding it in digitally to every scene would be incredibly time-consuming, so they've gone with a more low tech solution - the skyline is actually a humongous shower curtain that hangs behind where all the windows are, so it appears like it's the view from inside everyone's offices. Crazy! We would never have guessed.

14 Michael Phelps Got A Cameo Because He Was Such A Huge Fan Of The Show

Whether they're professional athletes or are involved in the entertainment industry, plenty of celebrities are fans of certain shows, just like the rest of us.

Swimming superstar Michael Phelps is apparently a big fan and as a result, was given the opportunity to have a cameo appearance in an episode of the show.

And no, he didn't have to learn any real acting chops - he just played himself in an appearance, which is the easiest way for a celebrity to make a cameo. Seeing him as any other character wouldn't have been that believable anyway because, well, he's Michael Phelps!

13 Louis Litt May Love Cats, But The Actor Who Plays Him Is Actually Severely Allergic

Anyone who knows even the slightest bit about Rick Hoffman's character Louis Litt knows he has a particular obsession - cats. Louis absolutely adores his cat, and the cat even makes it onto the show from time to time as a visitor at the office. However, did you know that in real life, Rick Hoffman is actually incredibly allergic to cats? It's not bad enough that he needs a stunt double, but whenever a cat is required of a scene, the crew has a ton of EpiPens and inhalers ready to go just in case Hoffman has a reaction. Talk about dedication to your character!

12 Lawyers Run In Gabriel Macht's Family

Gabriel Macht is totally flawless as the arrogant yet amazing Harvey Specter, and while part of it is due to his acting chops, there's some of it that might be because of all the lawyers he's seen in action.

As Fame 10 reports, his sister was a district attorney in the Bronx, his grandfather was a judge, and he also has a cousin and aunt that are lawyers as well.

It's definitely not a requirement that you know someone who has the career of a character you're playing, but it probably doesn't hurt to be able to ask a few questions of someone who has first-hand experience.

    11 Harvey's Office Doesn't Have A Single Drawer

Harvey's office seems to have it all - an incredible view of New York City, amazing furniture, a huge record collection and a ton of autographed sports memorabilia that shows off his personality and star power. However, USA Network revealed there's one thing that Harvey's office doesn't have - drawers. We're not sure how we've never noticed it, but it turns out there's not a single drawer that can be opened in the whole office. We suppose that's what Donna's desk is for? Or perhaps it just proves that he's got no secrets and nothing to hide - it's all out in the open.

10 The Name "Specter" Is Actually An Anagram For The Word 'Respect' - Talk About A Hidden Meaning!

It's always interesting to learn about the reasoning behind characters' names and why they're called what they're called. Harvey Specter is a memorable name that seems like it's been taken straight out of a classic film - he just sounds like a powerful lawyer. However, there's another layer of meaning behind his name as well.

His last name, Specter, is actually an anagram for the word 'respect.'

And, given his character values and all that he stands for, that's basically the perfect name for the superstar lawyer. We love when there's a little extra thought behind character names beyond just what sounds good to the audience.

9 Meghan (Rachel) And Abigail Spencer (Scottie) Were Born On The Exact Same Day And Year

Meghan and Abigail didn't get a whole lot of scenes together on the show as Spencer was only there for part of it, but they do have something in common. It turns out, both of the gorgeous actresses were born on the exact same day - August 4, 1981. How crazy is that? They're both Leos who love the spotlight and are super passionate about what they do. And, it seems that their shared birthday helped spark a strong friendship - Abigail was one of the members of Meghan's girl squad on her wedding day, and they're still really close to this day (although Spencer may have to fly a bit further to visit her nowadays!).

8 A Lot Of The Cast Members' Family And Partners Appeared On The Show As Guest Stars

Guest stars are an important part of the equation for any show - on the one hand, you want the main cast to shine, but on the other hand, the guest stars need to be strong enough to hold their own in a scene.

On Suits, there have been quite a few guest stars over the years, including some people who are quite close to the main cast.

Professor Gerard is played by Gabriel Macht's father, Stephen Macht. Zoe Lawford is played by Gabriel's wife, Jacinda Barrett, and Claire Bowden is played by Troian Bellisario, who is Patrick J. Adams' wife.

7 Gabriel Macht Absolutely Hates Harvey's Hairstyle

Everyone would agree that Harvey has an amazing sense of style and always looks incredible in his suits, but his hair is a bit more of an acquired taste - and it seems Gabriel Macht himself hasn't quite acquired it yet. He spilled his thoughts to Metro, saying "I don't like it at all. I find it to be icky and crispy. I am not crazy about the slicked-back look, but it works for Harvey."

We have to admit, it totally does - we kind of can't picture Harvey with messy, tousled hair. Something about the really structured, slicked-back style just looks like he's armed for battle and ready to conquer.

6 There Are Over 100 Literal Designer Suits On Set At All Times

While the characters sometimes have scenes where more casual attire is required, for the most part, they wear the kind of clothing appropriate for a legal office - suits, structured dresses, etc. And, while some of the men's suits may blend together as you watch the show, it's definitely not because they're rocking the same ones time and time again.

In fact, costume designer Jolie Andreatta admitted that there are always about 100 suits stocked on set, ready to go, from major designer brands.

Harvey alone, as Gabriel Macht admitted, can wear up to 10 looks in every episode. That's a lot of suits!

5 Jessica Was Originally Supposed To Be A Male Character

USA Network revealed this little tidbit, and we have to admit, we're incredibly glad things played out the way they did. From Harvey Specter to Louis Litt to Mike Ross, there are a lot of really smart, brainy men on the show. Jessica is a total force to be reckoned with, someone chic and feminine who also controls everything around her. We can't imagine the show without her, so we're glad that writer and showrunner Aaron Korsh realized that they needed a little variety on the show. I mean, the male characters are great, but the show really did need a razor-sharp female lawyer in the mix.

4 The Show Is Based On Showrunner Aaron Korsh's Real Life Experiences

You may have assumed that writer and showrunner Aaron Korsh just got the idea for the show from seeing all the other successful legal dramas on the air over the years, but it turns out that it was inspired by his own experiences on Wall Street.

Actually, the characters on the show were initially supposed to be investment bankers.

Korsh eventually decided the financial world wasn't for him and made the move to Los Angeles to start writing for the entertainment industry. He began working on a script featuring investment bankers, and it evolved from there, eventually becoming the hour-long legal drama we know and love today.

3 Meghan Auditioned In An H&M Dress Purchased Minutes Before She Walked In

Meghan is living in an entirely different world now, but back before Suits started, she was just another actress trying to get incredible roles and make it in the industry. When she went out on her audition for Suits, she dressed casually, in a way she dressed for a lot of her auditions.

Once she showed up, though, she read the room and realized that she needed to be a little more polished for this particular role. So, as Vanity Fair reported, she ran into a nearby H&M, picked out a more corporate-looking black dress, and brought it with her. Talk about quick thinking on her part!

2 A Lot Of The Photography In Rachel's Office Is Actually Patrick J. Adams' Work

There are a few characters who have a distinctive sense of style in their office, like Harvey with all his sports memorabilia and records, but most just have fairly generic offices. Rachel Zane has the kind of chic office you'd expect any stylish woman to have.

However, if you assumed the person responsible just picked up some random photographic prints to display as art, you'd be wrong.

Most of the shots in Rachel's office were actually taken by Patrick J. Adams, who plays Mike Ross.

In addition to being a talented actor, it turns out he's also a really great photographer.

1 Though The Show Is Set In NYC, It's Filmed In Toronto

The vast majority of shows in the industry are filmed in Los Angeles, on set, but there are some shows that go a little further away to capture a specific feeling in a particular city. In Suits' case, that city is Toronto - it allows the show to have that metropolitan feel of New York City without actually having to deal with the cost of filming in NYC. Most of the Suits cast lived in Toronto while the show was filming, as they spent so much time in the year there, so they all got a taste of the Canadian life for a large portion of the year.
