19 Things To Know About The Woman Who Has Snagged Chris Pratt's Heart
Typically, when we hear the name Schwarzenegger, we immediately think of Arnold. He's made a name for himself in both Hollywood and politics. Sometimes it's hard remembering that he is the father of adult children now. These days, however, we are hearing that last name in a very different context. Second-generation Schwarzenegger Katherine has been in the news a few times over the years, but probably not as much as she is now. That's what happens when you start dating an A-list actor-- and especially one as swoon-worthy as Chris Pratt.
Up until now, we didn't know much about her, but we are dying to know-- who is the girl that seems to have won the heart of Star-Lord? He has been linked to a few girls since his split with Anna Faris, but this seems a little more serious.
Katherine is 28 years old and so far, she has just become famous because she is related to someone famous. Not to say that she isn't important, but she would not likely be talked about right now if she wasn't the daughter of Arnold or dating Chris Pratt. That's why we decided to learn more about her. Check out these 20 things to know about the woman who has snagged Chris Pratt's heart.
19 She's Part Of A Fashionable Family
If you have ever looked at her understated and elegant fashion choices, you might be surprised to see that she has some fashion history.
But let's not forget that Katherine is the great-niece of fashion icon Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
"Of course you look at pictures of [Jackie Kennedy Onassis], pictures of different people in our family or in our world, and you want to try to emulate some of that," she said. "But I think just really embracing your own style and dressing for your body type is definitely something that I would like to do."
18 She's An Author
You might be surprised to know that Katherine has written three books-- two self-help books and one children's book. Rock What You've Got: Secrets to Loving Your Inner and Outer Beauty From Someone Who's Been There and Back (2010), I Just Graduated… Now What? Honest Answers From Those Who Have Been There (2014) and the children's book Maverick and Me (2017). “I wanted to write this book because I saw how kids reacted to me having my dog and the fact that you could get a dog that came with a story,” she told Us Weekly of Maverick and Me.
17 Her Mom Played Match Maker
When news got out that Katherine and Chris were dating, everyone wondered how on earth the two had even met. According to a source, it was Katherine's mother Maria Shriver. "Maria helped set them up," the insider told InStyle. "It's still new."
Shriver had apparently encouraged the two to go on “multiple dates.” Now we are even more intrigued!
How did Shriver pull this together, did they talk through agents or was it like a blind date? It can be embarassing to have your mother set you up on a date, but we are betting Katherine is pretty happy about it now.
16 She Fights For Animal Rights
Katherine loves animals and she has vowed to protect them, and that's why she is an ambassador for ASPCA. She has a rescue dog named Maverick, whom she named her book after, and just loves to help animals. She is a strong believer in helping animals out of bad situations so that they can have a better quality of life, which is part of the reason why she adopted Maverick. Supporting and loving animals is a pretty big deal for her, and if her children's book is any indication, she's hoping to inspire future generations to do the same.
15 She's Following In Her Mom's Footsteps
Maria Shriver made a name for herself apart from her husband's success and is well respected in the media world.
Not only does Katherine look just like her mom, but she is also interested in broadcast journalism.
When she was still in college, Entertainment Tonight gave her a chance to conduct her first interview with Tom Hardy, Chris Pine, and Reese Witherspoon for the movie This Means War. "Before I went in there, I was like, 'I'm going to throw up. I'm going to have projectile vomit in their faces, I'm so nervous!'" Schwarzenegger told People magazine.
14 She Is On Chris's Level
Over the past year, Chris Pratt has made it pretty obvious to the world that his belief in God is important to him as well as his family. But those things are strongholds in his life and he's likely looking for a woman who feels the same way. Family and religion are also important to Katherine and the two even went on a date to church. “Family is very important to both of them, as well as their spirituality,” an insider told People. “She's very, very sweet and maternal and great with his son.”
13 She's Got Her Own Blog
Doesn't everyone have a blog these days? It seems that way sometimes. But considering Katherine is into journalism and writes her own books, it's not surprising that she would have a blog as well.
When she is blogging, she tends to touch on a variety of topics such as health, fashion, animals, and food.
“People my age have an important role to play across the board in our society and I want to use my voice for positive change,” she wrote in her site's About Me section. That bettering-the-world mindset almost has us embarrassed to be so focused on her and Chris' relationship… Almost.
12 Her Mother Is Proud Of Her
It was Maria Shriver that was asked to give the commencement speech during her daughter's graduation from the University of Southern California. When her speech to the entire graduating class was concluding, she had a special message for her daughter and it just shows how close their family really is. “I'm pausing to be in awe of this moment, that I'm standing at my first child's graduation from college," she said. "I'm in awe of the woman you are, your grace and courage and strength. I'm so proud of all of you and what you've done to get here."
11 Her Parents Are Protective Of The Family
That's not at all surprising, especially since they are both a Hollywood family and a political one.
But the goal was to give the children a normal life, not one in the spotlight and maybe that's why Katherine seems so… normal.
"They were very protective of having us in the public eye when we were younger. We didn't go to Hollywood premieres," she told USA Today. "We practiced community service. We went to school and camp like normal kids," she said. She's definitely in the spotlight more these days, but we're hoping that the relative solitude she had prior to that keeps her grounded.
10 She Moved Away From Her Father
Finding out something like that about your father can't be easy for any child, especially when you have to see it in the headlines. It's even worse when you hear he carried on a long-term relationship with the maid and fathered a child with her. "My parents always really sheltered us, so when [the separation] started happening, it was like everything came out of nowhere overnight," Katherine told Harper's Bazaar. "I would go out to lunch, and literally 20 people would come and scream at me. And I'm like, 'This is so inappropriate; you're trying to provoke me to have an attack and say something crazy.'" That's when she headed to London. "I just kind of wanted to go away and realize that it's not as big a deal in other places," she said.
9 She Is The Oldest Child In The Family
Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger had four children throughout their marriage and Katherine is the oldest. She has three younger siblings-- Christina, Patrick, and Christopher.
“We do everything together as a family,” Katherine said. “We've maintained very, very close relationships with every member of my entire family and my family has done a great job at keeping us all together, showing up for one another.”
She went on to say that no matter what difficulties they are always a team. “We are very, very close and love one another - and just because my parents aren't necessarily together, doesn't mean anything or affect our family in any other way.”
8 She Has A Huge Social Media Presence
Considering that she's not really a Hollywood star in the traditional sense, Katherine still has a large following on social media. She has 250,000 followers on Instagram alone. If you have ever checked out her social media account, you can see that her family is definitely an important part of her life. She uses her Instagram stories to update her followers on beauty, food, and her skincare routine. She is also a brand influencer and you can see how she has promoted brands such as Bumble, Vitamin B3, and Tom's of Maine Creamy Coconut Natural Body Wash.
7 She Had Self-Esteem Issues
It's, unfortunately, something that many young women go through in their lives. Despite her parent's reassurance that she was smart and intelligent, Katherine struggled with her body image as a young woman. "It was the first time I was aware of my body and compared what I looked like to what other girls looked like. It freaked me out," she told USA Today.
To make herself feel better, Katherine focused on keeping trim and fit.
She once tried to stay below 100 pounds during a competition with a friend who was thinner than she was. Though she stated she "did not have an eating disorder at all."
6 She Loves To Host Parties
It seems her mother's love of planning and hosting parties has rubbed off on Katherine. "[My mom has] taught me so many things about how to host and throw a perfect party!" Schwarzenegger told AOL. "One of the things she's always told me is to make sure your guest bathroom is ready, and that it's just like every other room, so you shouldn't neglect that." She took that advice to heart and hosted a baby shower for a friend. She wrote about it on her blog, writing that "even though I had never hosted a baby shower before in my life, I was super excited to do it and it turned out to be so much fun."
5 She Has A Half Brother
The news of the existence of Katherine's half-brother came out when Arnold Schwarzenegger confessed to the affair with his maid in 2011. Though we were surprised it took that long as his son is the spitting image of him.
Arnold asked for forgiveness from his family and although Maria Shriver filed for divorce, they are still trying to keep the family unit together.
Arnold spoke to Howard Stern about his son; “He's terrific and he totally understands the situation,” the actor said. “So, it all has worked out… It's a very tough situation for him. It's a very tough situation for my kids, very tough situation for my family. It was tough for everybody. But it has happened and now we have to figure it out, right?”
4 Her Mom Is Her Best Friend
It's always great to see a mother-daughter bond like the one that Maria and Katherine share. "I talk to my mom about six times a day, and we constantly e-mail in between that," she told Harper's Bazaar. "People say that I'm her twin. I guess it would be the Kennedy genes; my cheekbones are coming out. We'll be at the breakfast table and my mom will look over at me and say, 'I see them!'" Katherine has also shared that she considers her mom to be one of her "biggest role models." Of course, their bond is probably what landed thsi gal Chris Pratt--mom had great instincts!
3 She Adores Beyonce
Her mother isn't her only role model, as Katherine is also absolutely obsessed with Beyonce. Who can blame her, though-- the woman is completely rocking her entire life and is a role model to girls and women across the planet.
Katherine has some friends in high places and one of them has to be Queen Bey.
She told Refinery29 that she's "overly obsessed with Beyoncé. She's definitely a huge role model for me." It sounds like she is not only a lover of B's music but also appreciates how the star represents herself as well.
2 She Had To Be A Good Girl
When her father was the Governor of California, Katherine learned at the early age of 13 that her actions could affect her father's career. "It could have ruined my father's career if I was caught drunk driving or something like that," she told Harper's Bazaar. "Being the oldest and going from being an actor's kid to being the governor's daughter, it's a totally different amount of pressure put on you to be perfect." She states though that she was far from perfect. "I did go out, I did drink, I had a boyfriend in high school, so I definitely had times of partying," she said.
1 She Considered Getting Rid Of Her Last Name
We could hardly blame Katherine for considering changing her name-- going around with your famous father's name has its own level of pressure attached to it. There are plenty of stars in Hollywood who didn't keep their famous parent's name.
But it was her classmates that were driving her nuts about her dad and “weightlifting or how to do a proper bicep curl."
It also made it really difficult for her to date. "It's like, 'Do you want to date my father, or do you want to date me? Like, I can arrange that for you,'" she quipped. "I thought of changing [my last name] because, especially for dating, it's impossible," she said. "It's something I deal with every day, and I am hyperconscious about it."
