16 Celebrities That Got Married Under A Year Of Knowing Each Other
Many celebrities live very exciting lives, with extreme highs and lows, and more drama than we could ever imagine. One thing that is guaranteed to spice up someone's life is getting married, and even more so when you do it on a whim. There are quite a few celebrities out there that tied the knot to partners they hadn't even known for a whole year (some more than once). But worry not, many of these relationships have survived!
Although most people would argue that marrying someone you haven't been with for very long is a bad idea, some people actually manage to make it work.
It's hard to explain why some of these relationships worked out, and why others didn't. All of these couples clearly had strong connections to each other that developed very quickly, but circumstances (and perhaps age) contributed to the ultimate fate of these marriages. Check out our list of some of the most memorable, most spontaneous celebrity marriages and see who managed to make it work. Believe it or not, one of these couples actually got married the same day they met each other. How's that for excitement?
16 George Clooney And Amal Alamuddin: Married After 11.5 Months
George Clooney and Amal Amaluddin quickly became one of Hollywood's greatest power couples after getting married four years ago. They may seem like they've been together forever, but these two actually got married rather quickly. According to Woman's Day, George proposed to Amal only six months after they were first spotted together.
George told Access Hollywood that he knew he wanted to marry Amal rather quickly, "I think about three days in, you could tell."
Considering he figured it out so quickly, a year was actually a decent amount of time to wait! George and Amal welcomed twins in June of last year, and so far they seem to be the picture of marital bliss. It may seem like their life together began at lightning speed but as the old saying goes, "When you know, you know."
15 Chris Hemsworth And Elsa Pataky: Less Than 9 Months
Another beautiful couple that got married quickly and are still together: Elsa Pataky and Chris Hemsworth. According to Daily Mail, these two began dating in spring of 2010 and were married by December. Apparently, the decision to get married was pretty impulsive, and the pair randomly decided to tie the knot while on vacation. Chris has admitted that married life hasn't been all smoothing sailing. He told GQ Australia, "My wife and I fell in love, had kids, didn't really see each other for a few years, then fell back in love." Despite the difficulties they may have had, Chris and his wife are still going strong. They have three beautiful children and successful careers. Sometimes it does pay to be impulsive.
14 Cameron Diaz And Benji Madden: 8 Months
Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden met at a dinner party hosted by his brother Joel and wife Nicole Ritchie. Cameron had been friends with the couple for years but had never actually met Benji. Once they met, she told Andy that she immediately knew. The pair got engaged after seven months of dating and were only engaged for about a month before they married in their home.
The wedding only featured about 90 guests, including Drew Barrymore, who served as a bridesmaid.
The pair seem to be doing very well despite the fact that they initially seemed like an odd pairing. In spite of their quick union, this pair seemed to have a good amount of life experience before they got together, and perhaps that's the key to making a quick commitment work.
13 Jennifer Lopez And Cris Judd: Less Than 9 Months
Sadly, this relationship did not work out. JLo tied the knot for the second time with Cris Judd, a dancer, in 2001 after a few months of dating. While reflecting back on the marriage, Cris told Us Weekly that he had a very hard time adjusting to JLo's level of fame after they got married. He confessed, "[Our wedding] was a circus. I think several people got arrested trying to climb up a mountain… trying to sneak in." It's pretty easy to see how this level of chaos can ruin a marriage, and it sounds like Cris had a hard time with the possibility of having to sacrifice his privacy. Cris and JLo divorced only two years after getting married and as you probably know, JLo went on to get married for a third time to Marc Anthony. To his credit, Cris holds no bitterness over the end of his and JLo's relationship.
12 Nikki Reed And Paul McDonald: 7 Months
After being married for nearly three years, Twilight star Nikki Reed divorced Paul Mcdonald, a former American Idol contestant she met at a film premiere. Only a month after meeting, Paul moved into Nikki's home and after seven months of dating, these two got married. The duo even worked on music together while they were married, and they continued working on an album after announcing their divorce.
Overall, that's probably as amicable as a divorce can get!
Since then, Nikki has moved on and gotten married to actor Ian Somerhalder with whom she had her first child in July of last year. Overall, it seems that Nikki learned a good deal from her first experience with marriage, so things could have turned out much worse.
11 Kaley Cuoco And Ryan Sweeting: 6 Months
Kaley Cuoco could be walking down the aisle anytime soon with her fiance Karl Cook, but it wasn't too long ago that she was married to a totally different man. Kaley fell quickly in love with tennis player Ryan Sweeting, who she met through mutual friends. They became engaged after three months of dating and had a winter wedding three months after that. After almost two years of marriage, Kaley filed for divorce in September of 2015. These two did not end on friendly terms, Kaley recently told Cosmopolitan that once they got married, Ryan "was not the person I originally met." She even added that he "ruined" marriage for her. Ouch. The bright side is that she seems to have learned from that experience, so we certainly hope those lessons will help her in her second marriage.
10 Britney Spears And Kevin Federline: 5 Months
You probably already know this relationship didn't work out. Britney and Kevin's relationship was brief but certainly memorable! These two met while Kevin was serving as a backup dancer for the band LFO, which was on tour with Britney. According to Us Weekly, Britney was the one that proposed to Kevin in June of 2004. Interestingly, Britney had gotten married just a few months earlier, in January of 2004, to her childhood friend Jason Alexander.
That marriage was annulled after less than a week, so she was a free woman by this point.
After Britney and Kevin married, they quickly began doing a reality show called Chaotic, a fairly accurate word to describe her life in that era. The two had two children very quickly, and then Britney had a very public meltdown that led to the whole shaved head incident. By 2007 this couple's divorce was finalized. We imagine it was a relief for both of them.
9 Jennifer Lopez And Marc Anthony: 4 Months
The only woman to be featured twice on this list is none other than Jennifer Lopez. When it comes to love, she has quite a reputation for going all in. Even though her and Marc Anthony have been divorced for four years, it would be silly to call their relationship a failure. These two actually first met in 1998 but they didn't start dating until 2004. They married that same year, had twins in 2008, and announced their split in 2011 before finalizing their divorce in 2014. There is certainly a great deal of history in this union. Fortunately, the two are still friends, and they've even continued to work together despite dating other people. JLo may have some regrets about her quick marriages in the past, but overall she seems to have pretty good taste in partners.
8 Renee Zellweger And Kenny Chesney: 4 Months
This is one pairing we didn't realize had ever been a thing! Actress Renee Zellweger and country singer Kenny Chesney married in May of 2005 after a very brief period of dating. The marriage became just as brief when Renee filed for an annulment just four months later. She cited "fraud" as the reasoning behind it, which is quite a change from the standard "irreconcilable differences" that most celebrities normally go for.
After announcing their split, the pair released a joint statement explaining their split was caused by a "miscommunication on the objective of their marriage" which inspires more questions than answers, like what the "objective" of a marriage is anyway.
Overall, it seems that the fact that these two got married so quickly meant there were some important conversations they didn't get the chance to have before walking down the aisle, which tends to be the main reason people tell you not to get married too quickly.
7 Michael Jackson And Lisa Marie Presley: 4 Months
It's almost poetic that the "King of Pop" and the daughter of the "King of Rock and Roll" ended up together, even if their marriage didn't actually last that long. According to Madame Noire, these two tied the knot after only four months of dating. The two remained married for two years, and although there were many rumors that their union was career motivated, Lisa denied that idea during an interview with Oprah. According to Lisa, the marriage unfortunately ended because she was in conflict with a lot of the bad influences that Michael had in his life. Even today, many are still fascinated by the couple and what their lives were like together, but Lisa insists that they had "a normal marriage." Celebrities, they're just like us.
6 Nicholas Cage And Alice Kim: 2 Months
Actor Nicolas Cage met his third wife Alice Kim in 2004 when he dined at a restaurant she was working at as a waitress. Alice was only 19 at the time, but that didn't stop the couple from getting married after only two months together. Nevertheless, things turned out well for the pair, who were married for 11 years and have a son together.
Though the two are now separated, it seems they are still legally married.
Apparently, the couple's decision to get married was for very practical reasons; Nicolas was set to go to South Africa to film a movie, and getting married made it easier for Alice to travel with him. We're not sure if this is romantic or oddly impulsive, but we're rooting for this pair nevertheless. There still seems to be the possibility of reconciliation!
5 Nick Cannon And Mariah Carey: 6 Weeks
Way back in 2008, the world was pretty shocked to learn about Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey's marriage. Some people didn't even know they'd been dating when the wedding photos were released, but this is understandable considering they weren't even together for two months before tying the knot. The couple split in 2014 and finalized their divorce in 2015, but not before having twins Moroccan and Monroe. These two are a model example for divorce couples as they've remained friendly, and Nick refuses to talk badly about Mariah in the media. However, he has admitted that he has reservations about marriage after going through a divorce. When DuJour asked if he'd ever get married again, he responded, "I highly doubt it." Never say never Nick!
4 Khloe Kardashian And Lamar Odom: 3 Weeks
These two probably had the most public romance out of anyone on this list. Keeping Up With The Kardashians documented Khloe and Lamar's quick romance, and, once they got married, their show Khloe and Lamar did the rest. These two seemed to know they wanted to get married right away, and they managed to pull off a Kardashian worthy wedding in less than a month!
Unfortunately, Khloe and Lamar are now divorced, and they went through a lot before getting to this point.
In 2015, Khloe even called off their divorce proceedings to be by Lamar's side for some time after he had a near-death experience. As you probably know, Khloe had her first child with Tristan Thompson only a few days ago, and their relationship has sadly been plagued by scandal. Hopefully, Khloe's luck in the romantic department turns soon!
3 Julia Roberts And Lyle Lovett: 3 Weeks
Another blast from the past is actress Julia Roberts and her ex-husband Lyle Lovett. Julia, of course, is a famous actress while Lyle is a country music singer. When these two married in June of 1993, many people found the pairing odd, and their doubts seemed to be confirmed when they announced their separation two years later in 1995. The reason behind their divorce seems to have been an age-old Hollywood story: they were too busy with work and hardly ever saw each other. Lyle even told People that he never spent seven days straight with Julia. We can imagine how difficult it must be to make a marriage work under those circumstances. We all know how difficult it is to balance love and careers, and though it isn't impossible, sometimes you just have to choose which one is your top priority.
2 Pamela Anderson And Tommy Lee: 4 Days
Most people would agree that marrying someone you've known for less than a week is a very bad idea. There are so many things that could go wrong! After getting married four days after they met in 1995, these two got divorced three years later. Afterward, the two continued a complicated on-again-off-again relationship. Their two sons, Brandon and Dylan, were born not long before they got divorced. Their long history seems to confirm that they have a serious connection, however, their rocky relationship suggests that it's not the healthiest. These days, Tommy Lee is engaged and his relationship with his ex-wife and children is apparently less than stellar, but Pamela seems to be doing well.
1 Danny Bonaduce And Gretchen Hillmer: One Day
Who? It's okay, we wondered too, but this remarkable couple made it on the list for beating out all the others with their lightning speed romance. Danny Bonaduce is an actor and comedian best know for The Partridge Family and his ex-wife Gretchen Hillmer is an actor and musician. Sadly the two are divorced but you may be surprised to hear that they were married for sixteen years! Not only is that a century in Hollywood, but these two also defied the idea that getting to know someone before marriage is essential to the success of a relationship. When the two split up in 2007 Danny told People, "We're still living in the same house. Gretchen is my best friend and she still helps me with my career." It turns out that some people will always have a connection, even when their romantic relationships don't work out.
