15 Surprising Celebs Who Went To Prom Together
Prom is the most magical and anticipated night of a high school student's life. It's the one moment they cling to as motivation to get through the stresses and struggles that come with being in high school. Everyone comes together for a carefree night of fun, making one last round of high school memories before it's off to college, and on with the process of discovering the real world once you've graduated.
Celebrities are no different and are not immune to the fantasy and appeal of prom. At their core, celebrities are normal people with dreams and desires like the rest of us. No matter how many award shows they attend, parties they go to, or amazing experiences they get to have that most people don't, there's nothing more exciting than the idea of getting together with friends for one last night full of food, laughter, and dancing to say a final farewell to high school. Though not all celebrities have gotten the opportunity to attend their own high school proms, or even someone else's, there are a few that have and took hold of the chance to go even giving another celebrity the opportunity to tag along as their date to experience it with them. Here is a list of 15 celebrities who went to prom together.
15 Blake Lively And Kelly Blatz
You would think that the forces of Hollywood brought these two good-looking teenagers together, however for Blake Lively and Kelly Blatz, it was quite the opposite. Before Lively wore hundreds of fabulous designer gowns for work and was cast as New York' socialite Serena Van der Woodsen on the CW's Gossip Girl, Lively wore a sequined pink gown for her high school prom, which she attended with her then-boyfriend actor Blatz in 2005.
The two knew one another way before either of them made their marks in the acting world. The pair grew up together and attended the same high school in Burbank, California.
Lively had a long-time crush on Blatz before they officially began dating in 2004.
Lively and Blatz attended Burbank High School's prom in 2005. In that same year, Lively made her film debut in The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants and actually brought Blatz to the red carpet premiere of the film. In 2006, Lively and Blatz went on to star together in horror-thriller film Simon Says, this being Blatz's first acting role. The pair continued to date until they broke up in 2007. Soon after, Lively began dating her Gossip Girl co-star Penn Badgley while Blatz struggled to make a name for himself in Hollywood until he scored his breakout role as Nick Burns in the Disney TV movie Skyrunners in 2009.
14 Lucy Hale And Dustin Belt
Before Lucy Hale had dreams of being a famous actress, the Memphis, Tennessee native had dreams of becoming a singer. So, it comes as no surprise that Hale attended prom with fellow musician Dustin Belt in 2004 when she was only 15 years old.
Though Hale's acting career began in 2005, where she made an appearance in popular television shows like Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, Drake and Josh, and The O.C. Hale still made the time to attend the prom with Dustin Belt, one half of the Alt-Pop duo Heffron Drive. Hale reminisced on her high school prom experience in September of 2014, ten years later, in a commemorative tweet. Hale posted a photo of she and Belt posing together, her in a satin green dress and a corsage on her wrist and Belt in a suit with a matching silver vest and tie. Along with the picture, Hale tweeted: “Oh can't forget @dbeltwrites who is a huge part of @HeffronDrive too… here's a throwback for ya. [sic] Prom age 15.” Though Belt has since grown up to find success in the music industry and Hale in the music and acting business, it's still nice to know the even celebrities like to look back on old pictures and have a laugh.
13 Mila Kunis And Ashton Kutcher
If you even have the slightest bit of interest in pop-culture, you would absolutely know that Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher have a Hollywood love story for the ages: They met on set, didn't really take to each other during their youth, reconnected later on in life, fell in love, and are now happily married with two children. If that wasn't enough to make you swoon with happiness and restore your faith in love, it turns out they were also one another's prom dates… in an episode of That 70's Show.
To be fair, Kutcher and Kunis did not have a normal childhood or grow up like typical teenagers.
Kunis, especially, sacrificed eight years of her life to be on the show, which was the majority of her teenage years, and experiences like her first kiss and going to regular school.
Experiencing prom on the set of their TV show, through their characters was as close as Kutcher and Kunis could get, and it certainly seems like Kunis felt like it fulfilled her prom experience. When talking to W Magazine about the experience, she said “… When That 70s Show had a prom, my date for the prom turned out to be my fiancé. We can honestly say that we went to prom together!”
12 Mikaela Shiffrin And Thomas Walsh
Professional athletes are known for their extensive and grueling training, ninja-like focus, and perseverance when it comes to working towards attaining their dreams of making it to the Olympic Games and competing to bring home a gold medal for their country. Well, Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin and Paralympian Thomas Walsh managed to slip away from training for one night in order to attend the prom!
Shiffrin and Walsh have been friends since childhood, meeting when they attended preschool together in Vail, Colorado. Shiffrin moved to the East Coast to train and pursue skiing when she was seven years old, but despite their distance, the friends remained in touch. In 2009, Walsh discovered that he has Ewing's sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer that had developed in his lungs and pelvis. He began treatment, and a little over a year later he was cancer free but was left with a limp that would never fade. Doctors told Walsh that skiing would not be a possibility for him. Shiffrin helped him through the depression he had gone into because of this news and told him that once his cancer treatments were done, they would one day go to prom together. So in 2012, Walsh took Shiffrin to his school's prom. Shiffrin and Walsh have since competed at the Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games, and PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games respectively.
11 Ariel Winter And Laurent Claude Gaudette
Sometimes, you can have the best of both worlds, and let Modern Family actress Ariel Winter show you exactly how to do it. Winter got the chance to attend her high school's senior prom with her then-boyfriend Laurent Claude Gaudette. With her flowing hair and her mermaid style dress, wouldn't you say that Ariel looked like a modern-day version of the Disney princess? She certainly lived out her dreams, even if it was for one evening only.
Winter attended her high school's prom in May 2016 with Gaudette. Though the two are no longer together, Winter and Gaudette met in high school in 2013. On her initial impression of him, she said: "It was kind of like I saw him, and I was like, 'I would like to get to know him. And I did!'” Ariel initiated the friendship, which soon after turned into a relationship. The couple was very much on and off, splitting in December of 2015 only to get back together in December of 2016.
The pair broke up for good in June of 2016, around the time of Winter's graduation.
Though Winter continues to act, her education is a matter of high importance to her. Winter announced that she would be attending UCLA in the fall of 2016, with intentions of studying pre-law with hopes of one day becoming a social justice lawyer. In March 2018, Winter announced that she would be taking a break from college to focus on acting, but she would return to her schooling when her career's schedule is calmer.
10 Violetta Komyshan And Ansel Elgort
Instagram's cutest couple Ansel Elgort and Violetta Komyshan are notorious for their sappy-sweet and highly publicized relationship. Since they plaster their love for each other and their daily endeavors all over Instagram, you can watch them travel all over the world, sit courtside at New York Knicks games, and attend the most elite Hollywood events and award shows. But under all this glamour and luxury living, people forget that they're just two high school sweethearts who met in school. There was a time where they were worried about math tests and stressed about a giant pimple on their forehead just like the rest of us. Heck, they even went to prom!
Elgort and Komyshan attended New York City's Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School's prom in June 2014. The couple met while attending the music, arts, and performing arts high school where Elgort studied acting and Komyshan studied dance. The couple began dating in 2012 and remained together until they briefly split up in 2015 for a few months. Shortly after their break, they resumed their relationship and have been dating since then. Elgort's career catapulted into success the same year he attended his prom when he landed the male lead role of Augustus Waters in the cinematic adaptation of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars alongside Shailene Woodley, as well as his role as Caleb Prior in the cinematic adaptation of Veronica Roth's Divergent. Komyshan continued her dance career by joining BalletNext, a professional ballet company based in New York City after she graduated.
9 Selena Gomez And Demi Lovato
Celebrity best friends aren't too hard to come by, and neither are celebrity best friends who met working on the set of a project. But, celebrity best friends that met working on set when they were children that proceeded to grow up together… Now that's a category pretty much reserved for Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. Though they are no longer as friendly as they once were, the two young stars grew up together in the limelight after meeting on the set of Barney and Friends when they were seven years old, and never really got to participate in things that normal kids and teenagers get to experience, like prom. Which is why they decided to crash a high school prom together.
In June 2009, Lovato and Gomez crashed Etobicoke Collegiate Institute's prom in Toronto, Ontario.
Gomez and Lovato were in town for the premiere of their movie Princess Protection Program which was being held at the same venue, Toronto's Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex, as the high school's prom. Gomez had snuck out during a dinner that followed the premiere and found the high school's prom in another part of the venue. She snuck in long enough to dance to a couple of songs with some of the students, and then made her way back to the dinner. Upon her return, she told Lovato about the prom and they both went back to crash the party with four other friends. Gomez expressed her excitement by tweeting “PPP [sic] peeps and I crashed a prom tonight and danced with a high school!! amazing!! I finally had a prom! ”
8 Olivia Holt And Luke Benward
Celebrities are known for the constantly jam-packed schedules, so it seems like they don't have time to do anything. Sometimes, when you really want to do something, you need to make time. And that's exactly what Disney Channel star Olivia Holt did. In 2013, when Holt's high school prom fell on the same day as the Radio Disney Music Awards where she was nominated for the first time, she did not decide between the two events. She simply made the choice, and the time, to attend both.
In 2013, Holt attended prom with her former boyfriend, fellow Disney Channel actor Luke Benward, who posted about the events of the evening on his Instagram account, sharing with the world how Holt had won her first Radio Disney Music Award for her first ever single called 'Had Me @ Hello'. This single actually featured in the 2012 Disney Channel movie Girl Vs. Monster, which Holt and Benward were both in. The two played love interests Skylar Lewis and Ryan Dean, and it was their on-screen relationship that reportedly sparked their real-life relationship. The two dated from 2012 until they ultimately broke up in 2014. They have both continued to pursue acting with Holt even furthering her music career when she put out her first EP in 2016 with more music on the way.
7 Amandla Sternberg And Jaden Smith
Amandla Sternberg, who first made a name for herself when she portrayed young tribute Rue in The Hunger Games alongside Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, has since been recognized as one of Hollywood's prominent young activists and most promising young actresses. Sternberg is known for speaking her mind when it comes to matters dealing with gender and race. When it came time to find a date for her high school prom, Sternberg definitely wasn't afraid to speak her wishes when she asked a fellow member of young Hollywood, Jaden Smith to be her date.
Not only did the two attend Sternberg's prom in May 2015, but they also made headlines for their combined celebrity status and avant-garde prom fashion.
Though Sternberg looked beautiful in a metallic bronze colored dress, it was Smith who stole the show in his black and white color-blocked shift dress, layered over black skinny jeans, which he paired with a blazer and sneakers. Though their outfits weren't the traditional black tuxedo and poufy floor-length gown, (who needs tradition when you can be fashion-forward), Sternberg did get Smith a white rose and baby's breathe boutonniere for him to pin on the lapel of his blazer. In traditional teenage fashion, the pair documented their experience on Instagram, resulting in the most epic prom pictures anyone has ever seen.
6 Kim Kardashian And TJ Jackson
It's always fun and amusing to look back at the lives of some of Hollywood's most famous celebrities and see what they were like before millions of people wanted to take selfies with them and have them sign various body parts. One celebrity who is no stranger to looking back on her life pre-fame is reality star, Kim Kardashian. Before the start of her reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kardashian and the rest of her family grew up sans cameras, living a privileged life as the family of lawyer Robert Kardashian who famously represented OJ Simpson in the trial of Nicole Brown Simpson. It makes sense that Kardashian went to prom, but skipped out on the normalcy when she went with TJ Jackson, Michael Jackson's nephew.
Kardashian attended Bel-Air's Marymount High School's senior prom with Jackson, who was her boyfriend, in 1998. The two began dating when Kardashian was 14 years old and Jackson was 16. The Kardashian family had a close relationship with Jackson, and Kris became somewhat of a surrogate mother figure to Jackson when his own mother passed away in 1994. The pair dated for most of Kardashian's teenage years but broke up before Kardashian married music producer Damon Thomas, when she was 19 years old.
5 Scarlett Johansson And Jack Antonoff
Scarlett Johansson has been famous for as long as anyone can remember. So it's weird to think that while she has played a number of teenage roles, there was a time where she actually was one! Not only that, but she even did things that normal teenagers do, like go to their high school prom. She did go with another celebrity, musician Jack Antonoff, but you can only be so normal once you've reached a certain level of stardom right?
Johansson and Antonoff attended The Professional Children's School's prom in 2002.
At that point, Johansson had already begun to establish a place for herself in the acting industry. Johansson's career rose when she starred in The Girl With The Pearl Earring, She's Just Not That Into You, and most notably when she got cast as the Black Widow and made her first appearance as the character in Marvel's Iron Man 2. During Johansson's quick ascent to fame, Antonoff hadn't really broken into the music scene until around 2012 when his band Fun. began to gain major recognition, with one of their singles “We Are Young” going five-time platinum and winning Grammy of the Year in 2013 among many other accolades. Antonoff has continued his music career and has since written hit songs for major artists like Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Sia.
4 Danielle Fishel And Lance Bass
Before Lance Bass announced to the world that he was gay in a 2006 cover story for People Magazine, he famously dated Boy Meets World actress Danielle Fishel. Though the couple's relationship only lasted from 1999-2000, during that time Bass accompanied Fishel to her senior prom. As cute as this couple was, this iconic prom pairing almost didn't happen! When Fishel initially asked Bass to go to prom with her, Bass had turned down the invitation because he was meant to be in Japan with his band NSYNC during the time of her prom. There must have been a change in his schedule because a week later, Fishel said: “'I got 3 dozen roses in the mail with a card that said 'Plans have changed, I'll be in town, can I take you to prom? Check Yes or No' and there were 2 little boxes.'”
However, it seems like their pre-prom pictures were the only pleasant things that came out of their experience. According to Bass, the two did not have a good time at Fishel's prom. Because Fishel was working on her show throughout her teenage years, she was unable to attend school like a regular student. Bass recalls in an interview with Cosmopolitan that girls were acting “jealous and catty” towards Fishel and as a result, the couple only stayed for 20 minutes.
3 Candace Cameron Bure And Scott Weinger
Full House's Candace Cameron Bure and Scott Weinger went to prom as their characters DJ Tanner and Steve Hale on the show, and enjoyed it so much that they decided to give it a try as themselves! Bure and Weinger got to experience a real prom together when Bure took Weinger as her date to her high school's senior prom.
Bure revealed that she attended her prom with Weinger when she posted a photo of them from that evening in order to promote season two of the Full House reboot, Fuller House, with the caption:
“#TBT to my real life senior prom with @scottweinger. [sic] Yup, this really did happen (Awwwww.)… "
"Should DJ and Steve be together or is this ancient history? #TeamSteve #TeamMatt The drama continues on season 2 of #FullerHouse coming to @netflix December 9!! Who's ready?!” At the time, Bure was excited to have her friend accompany her to prom. She told Glamour when asked about whether she had dated any of her love interests on Full House: “I didn't date any of them, but Scott [Weinger, who played Steve] and I were really great friends. I took him to my high school senior prom, but he came as my friend.”
2 Sarah Clarke And Jon Hamm
Jon Hamm may portray cool and interesting characters on screen like Buddy in Oscar-nominated Baby Driver, The Falcon from Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, and most famously Don Draper in Mad Men. What has been Hamm's best role thus far? Twilight's Sarah Clarke's high school prom date.
Hamm invited Clarke to his high school's prom. Though they attended the same school, John Burroughs High School, Hamm was a year older than Clarke. He knew her because he and Clarke's older brother Preston were friends. Clarke accompanied Hamm to prom, making for a pleasant story to tell over some award show luncheon. If only it ended there. To make matters even better and the story all the more interesting, another Hollywood actor came into the picture: Paul Rudd! In true dramatic, and almost ironic, Hollywood fashion Rudd, who had gone to college at the University of Kansas with Preston, had met Clarke when she came for a visit and had immediately taken a liking to her. So much so, that he made the point to visit her in St. Louis. When Rudd arrived, he soon realized that Hamm, who he knew had taken Clarke to his prom, also had intentions of pursuing a relationship with her. The race for Clarke's affection resulted in, for Rudd, a very intimidating round of Trivial Pursuit: “They would ask a question like 'What is the largest lake in Africa?,' and Jon immediately went, 'Lake Victoria.' I felt so emasculated in the game that, as a result, I started reading atlases,” Rudd told Vanity Fair.
1 Brandy And Kobe Bryant
Before Kobe Bryant was an NBA All-Star and world-renowned athlete, he was just an up-and-coming basketball player who was still relatively nameless in the world of sports and needed a prom date. When Bryant met 17-year-old Brandy at the Essence Awards in 1996, he decided to ask her to go to his prom with him. In an interview with Philly.com, Bryant's mother recalls Bryant coming home and telling her about this girl he had met, saying: “I met such a nice, beautiful, intelligent, sweet person.” Later that evening, Brandy had called Bryant's home to let him know that her mother might let her go to his prom.
The "might" turned into a yes, as Brandy accompanied Bryant to his senior prom.
Evidently, the date was a special one for Brandy as she has since admitted to keeping the corsage given to her by Bryant as well as the Moschino dress she wore to the dance.
Around that time, Brandy had already accomplished much in her career like winning a Grammy and starring in her own television show, she went on to succeed in the music and acting world, receiving many Grammy nominations for her music, and nominations for her performance in the film I Know What You Did Last Summer and her television show Moesha. As for Bryant, shortly after his prom, he would be drafted into the NBA by the Charlotte Hornets only to later be traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he would become a legend in the sport of basketball.
