15 Secrets About Channing Tatum And Jenna Dewan's Relationship
Another Hollywood marriage bites the dust. Love is dead-again. While most people believe that celebrity marriages aren't exactly built to last, there are those select few couples that people believe might actually go the distance. Actors Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan had been blissfully married for nearly a decade-or so we thought. It turns out that there was trouble in paradise, and the two recently announced their separation in a joint statement on social media. Again, while most people probably aren't surprised about a Hollywood marriage coming to an end, there were a lot of people who were upset about the news since Tatum and Dewan are considered #couplegoals. So, where did it all go so wrong?
Just as people fall in love for an infinite number of reasons, the reason why two people break up, even when they seem to be happy together, isn't always crystal clear. For some, it's one big reason, and for other couples, a multitude of factors come into play, as far as a breakup is concerned. We may not be able to understand it all, but we can try. Here, we are going to take a look some of the things that could have caused problems in Tatum and Dewan's marriage.
15 Channing Tatum Has An Interesting Past
Everyone has secrets, and it seems like Channing Tatum made an effort to try and keep all lines of communication open with Jenna Dewan, when he shared his past with her. Before becoming a Hollywood actor, Tatum was a male dancer in clubs, and he made sure that he informed Dewan of this before they got serious. He said that he told her during "one of the very first, like, dinners we ever had together. I don't know. I'm not shy about it.” It seems that Dewan took it well at the time, and Tatum said that she didn't ask as many questions about it as he thought. "Weirdly enough, girls ask fewer questions than guys do.” Perhaps this was cause for some drama in the future, as it isn't every day that people have to deal with marrying someone with somewhat of a sordid past.
14 Jenna Dewan Dated A-List Celebs Before Channing
It's not uncommon to be curious about your partner's past loves. However, what would you do if you knew that your significant other had dated A-list celebrities before you? Even if you're a celebrity yourself, it's easy to feel even a bit of jealousy-celebrities are also human beings, after all. Jenna Dewan admitted to having briefly dated superstar Justin Timberlake before being with Channing Tatum. "We dated, not that long," Dewan said. "We were like friends… that dated.” According to Dewan, the pair began their relationship after Timberlake and singer Britney Spears famously dated, but insists that she was not a rebound. This might be intimidating news to some, but perhaps Dewan's dating history didn't bother Tatum at all, since he proposed, married, then had a child with her.
13 They Got Married In Their Twenties
No one can determine when someone is ready to get married, except that person, so it's difficult to speculate about whether or not someone's decision to do so is right. As well, people change all the time, and while making the decision to marry someone may be the “correct” choice at the time, anything can happen, and that person may turn out not to be your ideal spouse in the future. Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan got married in 2009, when they were 28 years old. People have tied the knot at a much younger age, but perhaps these two needed more time to think about their futures, in terms of their careers, before entering into a marriage. Unfortunately, we're not all fortune-tellers, so we just have to go with what feels right for us at the time.
12 Channing's Proposal Was A Bit Mean
Proposals don't necessarily have to be grand, romantic gestures. There are no rules as to how someone should propose marriage to someone. However, it's probably best that the proposal isn't a mean joke. “When I proposed to my wife I did something pretty cruel because I thought she was on to me. I basically told her I never wanted to get married to try to throw her off,” Channing Tatum said in an interview. “I told her, 'I don't believe in the institution of marriage and I don't think I ever want to get married.' She basically broke down crying.” Because he effectively devastated Dewan, he was forced to propose sooner than he had planned, so that she wouldn't have to continue to feel like he never wanted to marry her at all.
11 They Had Some A-List Celebs In Their Wedding Party
Planning a wedding can be one of the most stressful things for couples to go through-especially if you're an A-list celebrity with a bunch of A-list friends to invite. Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan had the likes of Marlon Wayans, Emmanuelle Chriqui and, Haylie Duff, just to name a few. In total, there were 220 guests at their wedding, and while they had an event planner around to help, it's difficult to imagine that the two had a completely stress-free time during the planning process, since most people say that this is usually a very challenging time for couples, regardless of how in love or compatible they are with one another. Fortunately, the wedding looked beautiful, and it will at least be a wonderful memory that the two share.
10 Was A Lost Wedding Ring A Bad Omen?
Even if you aren't the type of person who believes in signs and bad omens, losing your wedding ring can't be a good thing. When Channing Tatum was filming G.I. Joe, he lost his wedding ring and had to wear a string on his finger instead. He said, in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, ”I like to call it a placeholder, but my wife likes to call it a reminder.” Of course, this was shared in jest at the time, but it's possible that this was something of an issue between the couple, as losing a wedding ring, albeit accidental, would probably upset your partner, especially if it's a piece of jewelry from Neil Lane, which could not have been an inexpensive purchase. This probably wasn't enough to end their marriage over, but we imagine this was not a happy moment.
9 Jealousy Over Love Scenes Are A Problem
Even if it's part of the job, watching your spouse act out a love scene must be uncomfortable, to say the least. Jenna Dewan said, in an interview with E! News, that her then-husband Channing Tatum gets jealous when she has to perform a love scene for the camera. “It'd be weird if he was like, 'Ah, I'm cool with it, do whatever,' you know? Go and have fun. It's never fun, but you just get really used to it, it's weird after a lot of years in this [industry]. They [Channing and the cast] are, like, really good friends, so it's even more awkward. Yeah, we have this love scene, but we were just hanging with our wives and husbands the night before, but it's acting, you know-it's weird."
8 Channing Made It Seem Like Their Daughter Could Save Them
Just last year, InTouch Weekly reported that Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan were trying to have a second child. They already have a daughter, Everly, but apparently, baby number two was in the works for the then happy family. In an interview, Tatum said, about balancing fatherhood with his career, “None of this is easy, but at the same time, it's everything I would have ever wanted. Having a family and a little girl, it really makes things super clear.” Unfortunately, knowing that the two have now split up, it seems like the choice to try and have another baby would have been a bad decision. While Tatum and Dewan didn't have a second child, people may suspect that they tried for another baby in order to fix whatever issues they were having, although we won't know for sure.
7 There Were Missing Photos Of Them Together On Her Instagram
Most people probably want to spend as much time with their significant others as possible, especially going traveling and exploring new locales. This is why it probably wasn't a good sign that Jenna Dewan started going on vacations without Channing Tatum by her side, or at least, not posting photos of them together on Instagram. There were comments from some of her worried fans asking about Tatum's absence in the photo, and people speculated about whether or not Tatum was just the one behind the camera. It seems that people were correct to speculate about the couple having some marital trouble since the two are no longer together. However, if they were having trouble around this time, it must have been painful to read about people talking about their relationship and analyzing it.
6 They Hinted At Having Problems Communicating
When one of your biggest relationship challenges is a lack of communication, you may in for some trouble, as we've seen with Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. According to Dewan, ”You change when you're together from 25 to 35. I think maybe in my early 20s, I might have tiptoed around issues or didn't want to make too many waves. Now it's like, 'This is how I'm feeling.' You have to be okay with the other person becoming defensive, to let them be emotional and accept that it won't be okay for a while.” Perhaps communication problems were something that the two never quite got over, what with busy schedules and raising a family. Hopefully, both learn from this relationship if they decide to move on to other relationships in the future.
5 Fans Speculated Over A Provocative Pic That Channing Posted
Living in the public eye as a celebrity must be pretty difficult, especially in the social media age. As someone who people are already trying to learn more about every day, you're even more exposed if you even try to share parts of your life through social media. Sometimes, you might even become too exposed. In one instance that created a big stir, Channing Tatum shared a (tastefully) cheeky photo of his wife, Jenna Dewan, on Instagram. Many fans expressed their disapproval or just their mixed feelings about the post. Some wondered if Dewan knew about the post before he published it, and some wondered if she approved. Putting yourself out there only gives people ammunition to talk more about you, and that can be hard if they don't have nice things to say.
4 They Had A Different Lifestyle Choice And Even Raised Their Daughter Differently Because Of It
Everyone has differences. That's a fact that none of us can deny. Some say that opposites attract, but others believe that too many differences might just lead to problems in the future, especially when romantic relationships and marriages are involved. One of the major differences between Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan was their diets. Dewan is a vegan, and well, Tatum isn't. Dewan said, “We are complete polar opposites that way,” although, “Sometimes I can drag him to my vegetarian vegan restaurants - he politely eats, then promptly goes home and eats what he really wants!” The couple also raised their daughter on a vegetarian diet, which makes it two against one for Tatum, when it comes to mealtime. That could not have been easy on the couple all the time, even though it seems like a minor issue in the grand scheme of life.
3 Co-Stars Have Caused Drama In The Past
The rumor mill can be pretty brutal when it comes to celebrities-especially ones that are in relationships. During the filming of Magic Mike: XXL, it was rumored that actress Amber Heard, who was engaged to actor Johnny Depp at the time, was “cozying up” to Channing Tatum, even when Jenna Dewan was nearby. According to Hollywood Life, “Onlookers claim their connection was so blatant that things got super tense” when Dewan paid a visit to her hubby on-set. Trust is a big part of maintaining a happy and healthy relationship, but even if you trust someone, it can't be easy to hear rumors about them and people that they work with on a daily basis. Surely this wasn't easy for either Tatum or Dewan, and it could have caused a lot of issues.
2 They Weren't Always #CoupleGoals IRL
Celebrities, they're just like us! This means that while they may look like the perfect couple on the outside, there are still issues and arguments going on behind closed doors that we are not aware of. “When people say you guys have such a perfect life, I want to scream and tell them no one's perfect,” Dewan said, in an interview for Health Magazine. “We fight like other couples, we disagree about things, we have days where we don't really like each other.” The fact that she also said that "I despise the word 'perfect,'” means that it must have been difficult for them to see the pedestal that people were constantly putting them on as a couple. Sometimes, people's unhealthy obsession with celebrity couples can be really toxic, even if we aren't aware of it.
1 Their Relationship Has Been Under A Media Microscope Since The Very Beginning
Being married isn't exactly a walk in the park. Partnering up with someone for life is a huge decision and a very serious one as well. Sharing your life with a spouse means being there for the good, the bad, and the ugly, and those things are likely amplified when you're part of a celebrity couple. The challenges of marriage, plus being under constant public scrutiny must be so difficult to deal with, even for people like Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, who have lived a lot of their life in the public eye. You can even watch when they first meet! Everyone's a critic, and drowning out the noise coming from millions of people talking about your marriage might just have been too much for these two to bear.
