15 People That Stole The Show From Meg At The Regal Wedding
By now, you've probably heard a great deal about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding. We know there are those that get gleefully excited about Royal Weddings, and those that really hate all the fanfare. Regardless of how you may feel, it's certainly hard to escape. And yes, while the idea of "Royals" may seem somewhat outdated, at the end of the day, Prince Harry and his family are just as human as all of us. Still, we're not ashamed to admit that we'd like to be a fly on the wall at Buckingham Palace for a day or two.
It's certainly interesting to watch them navigate their new lives together and break tradition after tradition. It is also significant that Harry's new wife is biracial because as much as we don't want it to be a big deal, the British Royal Family is certainly not known for its diversity. Meghan's admission into this exclusive group is symbolic, even if it doesn't guarantee any sort of monumental change for most people. As many of her friends, family, and now famous Bishop have said, it's certainly a start, and under any circumstance, love should always be celebrated. Read on for some highlights from this beautiful wedding!
15 Prince Harry's Ex-Girlfriend, Chelsy Davy
For an event watched by millions and scrutinized from all sides by endless media outlets, Harry and Meghan's wedding actually went really smoothly. That didn't stop people from looking for something wrong. Thus enters Chelsy Devy, one of two of Harry's ex-girlfriends invited to the wedding (the other was Cressida Bonas). According to People, Chelsy has Harry's first major relationship and they apparently dated on and off for several years after initially meeting fourteen years ago!
Apparently, Chelsy and Harry's relationship eventually ended because she struggled with the public scrutiny, though the two have remained friendly.
During the wedding, Chelsy was subject to the kind of scrutiny she was trying to avoid, which many insiders claiming that her expression during the ceremony conveyed regret that she wasn't up there with Harry. Honestly, we think this is just stirring the pot. Okay, so maybe it's a little awkward to attend the wedding of someone you tried to make it work with for years, but that certainly should have been enough time to realize they weren't meant to be. For her part, Meghan was apparently gracious about the whole thing. The Daily Star reported that she broke protocol and gave Chelsy a hug during the reception. Otherwise, Chelsy would have had to bow to her. Yikes.
14 Prince Harry's Really Cute (And Single) Cousin
We understand that though many of you are happy that Prince Harry and Meghan found love, you're also mourning the death of your chances with England's favorite ginger (sorry Ed). So we're happy to reveal that there are many more eligible bachelors in the Royal Family just waiting to be pursued. One of them is Louis Spencer, a cousin of Prince Harry, and one of the breakout stars of the Royal Wedding.
According to Buzzfeed, Louis is the son of Charles Spencer, who is Princess Diana's little brother. Louis' title is Viscount Althorp (we're pretty sure even people in England don't know what that means). What's important is that Louis is believed to be single. He is 24-years-old, which is still fairly young, but what's in a number? One of the benefits of dating someone that is not technically a Royal but Royal adjacent is that it involves all of the glamour without the endless protocols and rules. For example, that rule about how you can't touch the Royals while taking pictures with them? Apparently doesn't apply to Louis. Though not much is know about him, a picture of him and Nicki Minaj cozying up for a photo has been circulating on the web. The picture is actually from 2015, ET Online reports, and was taken after Nicki's concert. Louis already sounds much more laid back then the rest of the Royals; could you imagine William and Kate at a Nicki Minaj concert?
13 Priyanka Chopra In Lavender
Even before joining the Royal Family, Meghan had some very famous friends, including the legendary Priyanka Chopra. Priyanka attended the wedding in a beautiful lavender Vivienne Westwood two-piece, which stood out because most of the female attendees wore dresses. Priyanka attended both the larger church ceremony and the more intimate reception hosted by Prince Charles.
For that, she wore an off-shoulder Christian Dior gown.
Priyanka went on to share a slideshow of pictures from the wedding, People reported, and she had a heartfelt message for her friend Meghan; "You my friend… are the epitome of love, grace, and beauty. Every choice made at this wedding by you both will go down in history, not just because it was your wedding but because this incredible wedding stood for change and hope… Thank you for being the perfect picture of all things good… I wish you both love and togetherness always." What a sweet message!
We love that Meghan has such sweet and supportive friends. One of the things these two share is their humanitarian spirit. Priyanka is already back to work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and she been documenting her visits with Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh, who are survivors of conflict in Myanmar, BD News24 reports.
12 Bishop Michael Curry And His Unexpected Sermon
Even if you didn't catch the Royal Wedding, you've probably seen clips of Bishop Michael Curry's ceremony and the strange reactions several members of the British family had to it. While Bishop Curry's 14-minute sermon has been praised for being powerful and impassioned, a lot of articles have been written about some awkward reaction shots from the Royals that cameras managed to capture. The focus of Bishop Curry's sermon was love, and the power it has to heal. In his sermon, he quoted Martin Luther King and discussed slavery.
It seems that this is the part that made the Royal Family uncomfortable (rightfully so) but we're okay with that. Meghan's induction into the Royal Family represents the first time in the modern world that the Royals have welcomed someone part black. It would certainly be strange to pretend that has no significance, and as you'll see from this article, Meghan and Harry's wedding probably showcased more diversity than any celebration the Royals have ever hosted. Furthermore, Bishop Curry was selected by Meghan and Harry and according to Time, he provided an outline of his sermon to the couple before the event. So if anyone was surprised by anything he had to say, it certainly wasn't them!
11 Serena Williams And Her New Family
Remember that thing we said about Meghan having famous friends? Well Serena Williams just happens to be one of them, no big deal! Marie Claire reports that Serena has been more than happy to share how excited she is for her friend Meghan. According to the mag, Serena and Meghan met in 2014 at an event. During an interview, Serena complimented Meghan, saying "She is a great girl and she's incredibly nice and I couldn't be happier for her."
Serena herself is recently married, and she brought her new husband, Alexis Ohanian, as her date to the wedding.
People reports that Serena and Alexis got married in November of last year. The couple's adorable daughter Alexis Olympia also made an appearance for pictures, and it was so nice to see Serena out with her new family! The tennis player wore a pink Atelier Versace dress to the wedding Marie Claire reports. Serena also snagged an invite to the wedding reception, for which she wore a Valentino gown, Huffington Post reported.
Instead of the traditional heel, Serena revealed on Instagram that she was actually wearing sneakers under her shoes, and it makes us love her more. We should all the doing this! If sneakers are good enough for a Royal Wedding, then surely they're good enough for a night out too. Although perhaps you have to be Serena Williams to pull it off…
10 Meghan's Mother, Doria Ragland
Unfortunately for Meghan, there's been quite a bit of drama surrounding her family ever since her engagement to Harry was announced. Everyone knows that 'family' is complicated, but Meghan's family seems to take it to a whole 'another level. As Town & Country reports, Meghan's half-siblings have said some terrible things about her, despite admitting that they haven't actually spoken to her in years. Overall, it seems that Meghan's family is not very tight-knit. This is what makes Meghan's relationship with her mother especially meaningful.
Not only is there a stunning resemblance between them, they're also clearly kindred spirits. Doria, who is a social worker, yoga teacher, and jewelry maker, has been credited by Meghan as being one of the most important influences in her life. Doria was spotted with Meghan and Harry at the Invictus Games months ago, indicating that she'd met Harry quite a while back. During an interview with the BBC, Harry admitted, "Her mom's amazing." Considering how much some of her family has done to try to diminish her joy, we can imagine both Meghan and Harry were grateful for Doria's support at the wedding. People reports that she wore a custom Oscar de la Renta dress to the wedding (in green like the Queen and Pippa) and she looked stunning. Like mother like daughter!
9 The Kingdom Choir And Their Rendition Of "Stand By Me"
We were rendered speechless by The Kingdom Choir's rendition of "Stand By Me." All we can say is that YOU NEED TO WATCH IT ASAP. Sorry, we just can't contain ourselves. Call us controversial, but we think this performance is even more worth watching than the vows! Serving as another reminder that Meghan is going to shake things up at Buckingham Palace, this choir group featured beautiful black men and woman performing an R&B classic, certainly unheard of at a Royal Wedding.
Music certainly has the power to transcend, and that was evident with this performance.
However, the story behind how the Kingdom Choir came to perform at the Royal Wedding was actually a surprise to us! According to Essence, it was actually Harry's father Prince Charles who came up with the idea of having the group perform at the wedding. Choir director Karen Gibson told the mag, "I understand that Prince Charles really likes gospel music." Who would have thought?! Apparently, Harry and Meghan jumped on the idea of having the choir perform and they're the ones that chose the song. Overall, it seems like the decision was a team effort. We're just glad everyone was able to come together to give the world that GIFT OF A PERFORMANCE. Sorry, we're done…
8 The Spirit Of Princess Diana
Leading up to the wedding, there was much discussion about Harry's beloved mother Princess Diana; what she would have thought of Meghan, how she would be honored at the wedding, etc. So it comes as no surprise that when the media noticed an empty chair beside Prince William at the wedding, many people suspected it was meant to honor Harry's mother.
However, The International Business Times reported that the chair was actually left empty as part of Royal protocol. The empty chair was directly in front of the Queen, and therefore could not be occupied so as not to obstruct her view. Oh, to be Queen! Even so, the website reported that many fans are sticking by the original theory. A lot of people follow the tradition of leaving empty seats for deceased loved ones at there weddings, and for this reason, the theory makes sense to them.
One user commented, "Nope… still going with the Diana story… " Well if you insist! According to People, one way she knows Diana was honored was with an aquamarine ring Meghan wore to the evening reception which originally belonged to Diana and is believed to have been gifted to Meghan by Harry. It was her 'something blue'! We're not crying, you are.
7 Pippa Middleton's Meme-Worthy Dress
There's just something about Pippa. She seems to make headlines at every wedding she goes to and this one was no different. This time though, it wasn't quite for the glamorous style she's normally praised for. The internet was not a big fan of the floral print number she wore to Meghan and Harry's wedding, but they were pretty quick to figure out why it looked so familiar.
Like Queen Elizabeth and Meghan's mother, Pippa wore the unofficial color of the day: green.
People reports that she was wearing a "Hepburn" silk dress by The Fold. As fancy and expensive as that sounds, all the internet saw was an Arizona Green Tea can, which Pippa had somehow adapted into dress form. It's pretty hard to deny the resemblance to be honest, and Arizona Iced Tea seemed to agree. They even took to their Twitter to poke fun at the situation and use it as a free marketing opportunity. Since Pippa is known for having a good sense of humor, we imagine she had a good laugh at the whole situation. Of all cans to take dress inspiration from, Arizona Iced Tea is probably one of the best. Just imagine if she'd showed up looking like an orange Fanta!
6 Meghan's Absent Father
Although Meghan and Harry's wedding went pretty smoothly overall, there were quite a few snafus leading up to it. Much of the drama involved Meghan's father, who was originally supposed to attend the wedding and walk his daughter down the aisle. Town & Country reported that less than a week before the nuptials, Kensington Palace released a statement from Meghan stating that her father would not be attending the wedding. His absence was as notable as the reason behind all of it. It was revealed shortly before the wedding that Meghan's father had staged photos (including the one above) of him preparing for the wedding.
TMZ reported that Meghan's father Thomas would not be attending the wedding due to fallout over the truth coming out about the photos. However, the site also reported that Thomas had suffered a heart attack around the same time. Thomas seemed to go back and forth about whether he would attend the wedding for a while, and many people anticipated his answer both because of his important role and because of all the drama surrounding Meghan's family. In the end, it was reported he would have to undergo heart surgery, so the timing seemed to be all wrong for him to attend for many reasons. Ultimately, it was Prince Charles that walked Meghan down the aisle (though we think it would have made more sense for Doria to do it). The mystery surrounding Meghan's family continues on!
5 The Adorable Prince George And Princess Charlotte
The youngest members of the Royal Family are already quite well known. Prince George and Princess Charlotte have grown up very fast, and Town & Country has reported that Charlotte is already known for being the boss. Of the young Princess, one guest told People that she kept the wedding party in line,"She was really sweet. There was one girl you wanted to go and she said 'No you can't go yet. We have to wait until we're asked. She was really organized!" It sounds as if Charlotte is already owning her role as a Princess.
Apparently, George was also rather helpful. He is said to have comforted the youngest bridesmaid, Prince Harry's two-year-old goddaughter, when she began crying at the beginning of the ceremony.
Don't worry though, George and Charlotte aren't perfect children, they were bribed with sweets through the whole day!
The wedding photographer, Alexi Lubomirski even reported bribing the kids with Smarties while taking the official wedding portraits. In case you're wondering, Smarties in the U.K. are more like M&Ms, not the sad, little colored tablets you get in the U.S. after all the good candy is gone. Can't imagine bribing anyone with those!
4 Meghan's Maid Of Honor, Jessica Mulroney, And This Hilarious Picture Of Her
Although Meghan didn't technically have a maid of honor at her wedding, she sort of did. Her best friend, Jessica Mulroney, served as her "Honorary Maid of Honor." People reported.Apparently, Jessica's position was signified both by the fact that she was wearing blue, and her seat inside the church, which was "the first seat closest to where Meghan and Harry were standing." Meghan kept up the tradition of having children as "bridesmaids" (including Princess Charlotte) despite the fact that she had a lot of close friends attend the wedding.
Meghan's jeweler told People, "she kept a special place for her close friends - even though they weren't standing at the altar with her, they were in close proximity… " Jessica and Meghan have been close friends for years, and Jessica's daughter Ivy was actually one of Meghan's bridesmaids. Jessica has received a lot of attention since the wedding for a number of reasons. The vibrant blue she wore certainly stood out among the muted green that a lot of important members of both families wore. In addition to having some resemblance to Kate and her sister Pippa, there's also the fact that she and Kate seemed to have melded into one in this particular photo from the wedding. Looks like there was more than one union that occurred that day!
3 Meghan's 'Suits' Co-Stars
People reported months ago that Meghan would be retiring from acting once she got married. We had pretty mixed feelings on this. It feels sad to see Meghan give up her career for the person she's marrying, but it's totally possible that she'd been tired of acting prior to her engagement. Furthermore, her retirement from acting can also be seen as a career change (since she'll now have many social and political responsibilities) rather than a major sacrifice.
Meghan's engagement and retirement have shed some unexpected attention on her show Suits, and her costars as well.
Fortunately, what Meghan lacks in family she'd made up for in friends.
Many of her costars actually attended the wedding, in addition to doing a number of interviews focused on Meghan's exit from the show and her future as a married woman. People reports that what seems to be the majority of Meghan's costars were at the wedding, including Sarah Rafferty, Patrick J. Adams, and Gina Torres. Perhaps they all recognized this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend a Royal Wedding, but it also seems that these costars really meant it when they said that they were a close-knit group. We're sure it was bittersweet for them to see Meghan start this new chapter!
2 Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Otherwise Know As 'Cello Bae'
In addition to incredible fashion and food, the Royal Wedding had surprisingly great music as well. Among those that got the honor of getting to perform at the nuptials is a nineteen-year-old named Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Yep, you read that correctly, nineteen. We're not sure how Sheku is going to top an opportunity like that, but if you ever hear him play, you'll know he's capable. According to The Daily Mail, Sheku first met Prince Harry while performing at a charity event.
Sheku was performing alongside his entire family who all play instruments as well! And concerning the invite to play at the wedding, he apparently received the call from Meghan herself. He told Daily Mail; "I was expecting a call, I didn't know what it was going to be about [but] it wasn't completely out of the blue, otherwise I would have been completely shocked." Sheku was obviously doing quite well even before the wedding, but it has certainly expanded his audience. His album has already reached the top 20 on the charts and he's been making the rounds doing interviews on British talk shows.
Most importantly, Sheku has now achieved Internet notoriety after being dubbed "cello bae" by the world wide web. All those high school cello players may finally get the dose of popularity that's always evaded them!
1 Oprah And Her Fashion Emergency
Marrying a Prince is pretty cool, but having Oprah at your wedding is probably cooler! What an honor for Meghan and Harry! Following the wedding, Oprah posted a video to thank Stella McCartney for designing her dress (they also designed Meghan's gown for the reception and Amal Clooney's gorgeous yellow dress) and for helping her avoid a big fashion faux pas.
According to Harper's Bazaar, she took to Instagram to say; "I would like to thank the Stella McCartney team for working all night long to get this dress finished. Because we had Dressgate. Wrong color! Now we got the right color. I think we're gonna be OK… Thank you so much for the detail, working all night… " Sounds like a close call!
According to Time, Oprah realized on Friday night that her dress would look too white in the light of day and the flashing of cameras.
It was considerate of her not to want to upstage the bride! She certainly got lucky that they dress could be fixed at the last minute, we probably would have had to borrow a dress. We can imagine it was a stressful time for everyone involved, including the workers that had to change the color of the dress. Of course, even if the dress appeared in pictures to be "too white," at least those attending would have known that it wasn't the case.
