15 Interesting Things About The Stunning Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt has been in the industry for quite a while. After all, who could ever forget her masterful performance over a decade ago in The Devil Wears Prada? However, it seems that her career has been picking up steam lately as she tackles more and more challenging roles in films like The Girl On The Train. She's always been the type who loved indie films, but lately, she's been managing to blend her love of complex characters and roles in big box office smash hits - and the world is taking notice.
Of course, it also doesn't hurt that she's married to fellow actor John Krasinski, and the two of them are too adorable for words together. I mean, talk about relationship goals. Especially since so many seemingly strong, stable Hollywood relationships have split in the past year or two, it's refreshing to see a couple that seems to truly be head over heels in love with one another.
You're definitely going to be seeing a whole lot more of Emily Blunt over the next few years, so why not learn a little bit about the British babe who is popping up in projects all over the place? Here are 15 things you may not have known about the stunning superstar.
15 She Initially Took Up Acting To Get Over A Childhood Stutter
It's always fascinating to learn more about why exactly actors and actresses got into the entertainment industry. Some made the decision a bit later in life, after working regular jobs for a few years. Others have stories of putting on plays in their living rooms for family and friends and seem to have always known they wanted to be in front of the camera. Emily Blunt has a bit of a different story.
She discussed her childhood foray into acting on NPR, saying that she had a stutter as a child and nothing seemed to help - except for acting.
On the recommendation of a teacher, she auditioned for a play, despite her nerves, and found that "I spoke fluently for the first time in a long time, doing a stupid Northern accent, that helped me. To get through a whole play and not trip up once - I think it was probably more emotional for my mom, who watched. I think that was huge." Talk about a silver lining! It must have been tough to struggle with a stutter, but who knows if she would have gotten into acting if she didn't have that battle to overcome? Sometimes, things happen for a reason!
14 Her Ex, Michael Buble, Wrote A Song About Her, Called "Everything"
We know, we know - we don't really want to think of Emily Blunt with anyone but her current hubby John Krasinski ever. After all, they're so perfect together - why not just ignore their previous relationships? However, you can't ignore the fact that Emily Blunt not only had a relationship with singer Michael Buble for several years, he even wrote a song about her entitled "Everything." And it's definitely a heartwarming song, with lyrics like "you're the swimming pool on an August day," "you light me up, when you ring my bell" and "you're every line, you're every word, you're everything."
Although hubby John Krasinski isn't doing too shabby lately himself - he created a nail-biter of a horror flick that Emily Blunt ended up falling in love with and got cast in it! Honestly, it's sort of impressive how talented all the men in her life are! Although we have a feeling John may not be the biggest fan of the song "Everything" because, well, who wants to hear a love song written about their wife when they weren't the one to write it? Perhaps just skip that one when it comes on the random playlist when they're hanging out at home or driving in the car.
13 She Met The Queen Mother As A Child And Tried To Give Her A Dirty Stuffed Animal
There's a bit of a perception that somehow every British star has met the Queen, which is silly, but in Emily Blunt's case, it's true. Well, the Queen Mother, at least (the mother of the current Queen Elizabeth II).
You see, as she spilled in a Vanity Fair profile, her grandfather was actually a fairly high ranking British military official, so Blunt got the opportunity to accompany him to an event where the Queen Mother was present.
A much younger Emily brought along quite a dirty stuffed animal as a security blanket because, well, she was young, and she ended up offering it to the Queen Mother because, well, she's a kind person! Apparently, the Queen Mother took one look at the grimy stuffed animal, mustered up her diplomatic skills, and simply replied that "oh yes, I see that he is very well loved."
We're sure Emily cringes when thinking about that incident now, but still - it's a pretty cool story to tell. Given how long she's been on the throne, there have been a lot of celebrities who have met Queen Elizabeth II over the years, but not quite as many who had the chance to meet the Queen Mother.
12 Before 'Into The Woods', Her Hubby Had Never Even Heard Her Sing
Another fun tidbit from the Vanity Fair interview Blunt did - apparently, her hubby, John Krasinski, had never, ever heard her sing before she was cast in the musical Into The Woods. Krasinski mentioned that he kind of assumed she was about as skilled musically as he was, and figured it "was such a cool gig, but to be honest, I was really nervous for her." He ended up stopping into a recording session and chatting with the director, who was singing Emily's praises - and he admitted to the director that he had actually never heard his wife's singing voice.
"He looked at me as if the earth had just opened up in front of him. His mouth was wide open. He did not say anything. He just turned to the window, cued the song, the orchestra started playing, and Emily started singing, and I just immediately wept," Krasinski says of the experience. Cute! Although we have to wonder, does she never sing in the shower, or around the house? It's different than giving it your full effort in a recording session, but still, it's a little unusual that he'd never heard her gorgeous singing voice before! Although he likely requests her to sing all the time now.
11 Her Dream Job Would Be To Flip Houses
Honestly, we can't picture Emily Blunt as anything but an actress - she's just so amazing at what she does! But as she confessed to Vanity Fair, if she ever decided to leave acting, her dream wouldn't be to step behind the camera or become involved in another facet of the entertainment industry. No - she'd do a complete career 180 and turn to the home renovation world. "It would be my dream just to flip houses. I adore renovating," Blunt said. "I love working with different materials and coming up with a different story for each room. I am Pinterest-mad." Uh, we sense a new project idea here!
Her schedule is obviously too busy to jump into the home renovation world full time, but maybe she could be the celebrity consultant on a new HGTV show?
I mean, if Chip and Joanna Gaines can build an empire, can you imagine the kind of star power someone like Emily Blunt would bring to a new show? Honestly, someone from the network needs to make it happen - she's hilarious, she's British, she's Pinterest-mad, she's fantastic in front of the camera… she has host written all over her! We're basically just waiting for this show to happen at this point.
10 Stanley Tucci, Her 'The Devil Wears Prada' Co-Star, Is Her Brother-In-Law
Unless you've avoided watching a movie for the past twenty years, chances are, you've seen at least one of Stanley Tucci's projects - even if it's just The Devil Wears Prada alongside Emily Blunt. And, apparently, he and Blunt are family now - and the story, detailed by SheKnows, is absolutely adorable. Obviously, Blunt grew close to him while they were working together on The Devil Wears Prada, so when she tied the knot with John in 2010, she invited Stanley to the wedding. And, obviously, she invited all her family members, including her sister.
Stanley Tucci got chatting with Emily's sister Felicity, and the rest, as they say, is history. They ended up starting a relationship, getting married themselves, and Tucci is now Blunt's brother-in-law. Since he released a cookbook recently, we know he's a fabulous cook, so we bet Emily and John always look forward to an invitation to a dinner party at Stanley and Felicity's house. Seriously, though, what a cute story - can you imagine how wonderful it must feel that the two of them met at your wedding and ended up having a loving relationship of their own? Forget acting - maybe Emily Blunt should become a matchmaker! She's definitely got a good track record.
9 Her First Date With John Krasinski Was At A Gun Range
John Krasinski definitely seems like the type of guy who would put a lot of time and effort into planning a date. He treats Emily with such love, and we have a feeling that was the case from the very beginning, not something that changed once they got married. However, their first date was… well, a little interesting.
John decided that just taking her to dinner and a movie was far too predictable and wouldn't allow him to stand out from the crowd enough, so he picked a different, more unconventional venue.
As he said on Conan, "on our first date, I decided, 'I'm gonna really hit the gas and bring her to a gun range.' I think that I was so sure that I would never end up with her… that I was like, 'you know what, I'm gonna blow it right away and then that way you don't feel bad'."
Luckily, there was something about him that Blunt found charming (I mean, who can blame her?), and she managed to look past the slightly unusual first date location and agree to a second date, then a third date, and so on. We're not sure if they'd opt to go back to the gun range on an anniversary, though!
8 She's Really, Really Good At The Cello
Okay, seriously, the amount of talent this woman has is just insane! Apparently, along with being a phenomenal singer, she's also musically gifted at instruments. Well, one instrument in particular - the cello. She discussed her love of the instrument with Stylist magazine, saying that "I want to learn to play the cello again. I played for ten years and used to be really good but then I discovered a social life and gave it up. It's so sad and I'm angry with myself because, when I pick it up now, I'm garbage. This time, I'm going to get a teacher and just do it." We have one idea for her - just get a movie role where you play a cellist! That'll essentially force her to brush up on her cello skills once more because well, it'll be a job requirement!
We can totally envision Emily playing an intense, supremely talented cellist, perhaps with some kind of a secret to hide (to be honest, we're dreaming of this movie already!). While many actresses learn a variety of skills when they reach Hollywood in an attempt to set themselves apart from the rest of the aspiring starlets, it seems Emily was well on her way to become a triple (or even quadruple) threat years before she stepped foot on a movie set.
7 She Almost Became The British Britney Spears
Okay, this story that Emily Blunt told to The Sydney Morning Herald is pretty wild. Apparently, back in her teenage years, she actually managed to get a recording contract: "I was at that stage of my life where I was like, 'who cares, yeah, maybe, that sounds cool.' Everything sounds cool other than being in school at 18," she said.
She ended up going so far as to record a demo and was on her way to being launched as Britain's next pop sensation when she had second thoughts.
"I got terrified and pulled out because I felt they were wanting me to be like Britney Spears," she admitted to The Sydney Morning Herald. Luckily, she didn't venture too far from the entertainment industry - just rather than belting out pop hits on stage, she ended up memorizing lines and putting on masterful performances for all her fans. Plus, she's gotten the opportunity to sing in some of her films, so it's kind of the best of both worlds - who knows, maybe eventually her former career path and current career path will collide as she tackles the role of a washed up teen pop star. We'd see that movie! Although, to be honest, we'd see anything featuring Emily Blunt.
6 She Nearly Got The Role Of Black Widow
This one is a little heartbreaking because we so would have loved to see Emily Blunt as part of the Marvel universe! She's proven that she can absolutely slay in action roles, she can play the dramatic parts perfectly, and she's just all around talented! She was not only in the running - according to The Independent she actually had the role of Black Widow (as well as the role of Peggy Carter), but the timing was the issue.
"It was never the right time, really, and it just didn't work out scheduling-wise with those two," Blunt says. "It's always a difficult thing to talk about because it's not fair to the actresses who ended up playing them, you know? It just wasn't the right time." Well, we can't deny that Scarlett Johansson definitely did a fantastic job portraying Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow on the screen, but we also can't help but wonder what Emily's take on the character would have been like.
We haven't seen her tackle too many roles requiring an accent, so it would have been interesting to see her interpretation of Natasha's slight Russian accent (and to see just how she would have changed her physique to fit the role).
5 Her Professional Stage Debut Was Alongside The Legendary Judi Dench
It seems to be fairly common for British stars, in particular, to have made their first debut in live theatre, on stage in smaller productions throughout the UK, before they end up moving to Los Angeles to tackle film roles. It's just something in the way they're trained, and the way theatre culture is just a lot different in Europe than it is in North America. Emily Blunt is no different - with only six months of training at a performing arts school, Hurtwood House, under her belt, she ended up getting a part in a play where one of her co-stars was Dame Judi Dench.
Talk about an intimidating way to be introduced into the world of professional theatre!
She definitely didn't show her rookie status too badly - The Evening Standard ended up naming her "Best Newcomer" for her performance, and she went on to star in another production not long after.
According to The Daily Mail, she was paid around 350 pounds a week to star in The Royal Family, but we have a feeling she would have done it for free to get experience working with legends like Judi. We wonder if Judi saw something in her back then.
4 She's Not A Fan Of Social Media
When it comes to social media, stars are all over the place. There are some celebrities who absolutely love being active on social media, and are constantly updating their fans on every little detail of their lives, taking selfies, getting behind the scenes shots from whatever project they're working on, etc. Then, there are the celebrities who value their privacy above all else and don't really love getting too involved in the world of social media. Emily Blunt definitely falls into the latter camp.
She was brutally honest with Vanity Fair, saying that "I don't think it does [anything], to be honest. I think a movie lives or dies on word of mouth and the trailer. I have seen people do endless social-media campaigns and the movie tanks, so I don't see a correlation… I strongly believe that my job is to persuade you that I am playing somebody else, so exposing too much personally is just something I can't get on board with." Totally fair! It's a shame because we have a feeling that she'd be hilarious on social media, but if we just have to wait to see her whenever she's promoting her latest projects, that's fine with us too.
3 She Was Told To Lose Weight For 'The Devil Wears Prada'
Emily Blunt has gone through a few physique changes over the course of her career, but never major ones. She might put on a bit of muscle for a more action-packed role, but in general, she's very svelte.
However, when it came to playing someone in the fashion industry, even her natural slim physique wasn't quite slim enough for the producers, apparently.
She spilled all the details in an interview with Craig Ferguson back in 2006 when The Devil Wears Prada was released, saying that she was told she needed to lose weight in order to play the over-the-top fashion assistant and that she was always starving on set because of the strict diet she was on (and the same went for her co-star Anne Hathaway.
Well, Blunt was definitely very thin in that film, although we have to say - we love her natural look the best. Hopefully, she's at a point in her career now where she can tell any producers that bring up weight loss to rethink their perspective or find another actress to take on the project. It's so crazy that talented actresses are stilling being required to shrink down, even if it's not really even necessary to the character.
2 She's The Niece Of A British Member Of Parliament
Emily Blunt definitely has a pretty posh accent, and it turns out, her family tree is fairly posh as well! It turns out, as IMDB reports, she's the niece of Crispin Blunt, who is a Member of Parliament for the British Conservative Party. We have a feeling that Blunt isn't quite as involved with British politics as she may have been when she was living there - she spends just about all her time in the United States nowadays, with hubby John Krasinski and their adorable family - but it's still a pretty cool thing to have in your family tree.
We wonder if Crispin ever gives her the juicy details on what happens in parliament - we have a feeling there could be some pretty wild movie ideas coming out of that conversation! It must be tough to take your children around the world when you're filming, but hopefully one day Emily and John can take their daughters to the UK to check out Parliament if they haven't already (and maybe get a little bit of a behind-the-scenes tour, courtesy of Crispin Blunt). After all, they're half British, even if they're growing up in America, it's still a big part of their heritage!
1 She Has A Fear Of Wearing Gloves
There are a lot of fears and phobias out there, but we have a feeling this is one of the more unusual ones. Apparently, according to IMDB, Emily Blunt has a fairly peculiar fear - a fear of wearing gloves. She commented on the quirk, saying that "I don't know why but I find them repulsive. I'd scream if my mother tried to make me wear them as a child." Well, it must be tough when working on period pieces where all the women wore gloves just about all the time!
Hopefully, she's managed to get over her fear a little bit, enough that she's able to handle it in professional contexts, because what a nightmare it would be to have to bring your A-game and act while you're literally shaking over how uncomfortable you are to be wearing gloves!
We also have to wonder what she does when it's really chilly outside - while California might be warm, she spent a lot of time in New York, where the winters definitely get pretty chilly. Perhaps she just stuck her hands in her pockets? Perhaps mittens are fine and it's just gloves that give her the heebie-jeebies? We have so many follow up questions.
