14 Fashion Trends From The '90s That We Still Love
While popular nineties boy bands like the Backstreet Boys or NSYNC aren't (sadly) making a comeback anytime soon, the fashion trends of that time certainly are.
Nostalgia has been a major part of fashion this past spring and summer season, with designers and fashion bloggers revamping '90s styles in the likes of denim jumpers, choker necklaces and grungy flannel, among others.
It's no doubt that the '90s were an iconic point of fashion-so iconic, in fact, that in 2015, it's making a serious comeback. So dust off your old pair of bell-bottoms and take a read at 14 of the '90s fashion trends that are very much back in style.
14 Jean overalls
Wearing jean overalls in the nineties wasn't just an indication that someone worked on a farm. Instead, they were a major fashion trend and one that has made a comeback in 2015.
Fashion bloggers have been notorious for reviving this style through their use of accessorizing it into a casual daytime or stylish evening look. This includes pairing it with sneakers, heels, platform boots or trendy undershirts. And with the possibility of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air making its comeback, overalls with one strap down may become an even more popular trend.
13 Choker necklaces
The signature throwback accessory of the nineties-the choker necklace-has been making its way onto the necks of celebrities, such as Rihanna, Kylie Jenner and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. It has been a fashion staple for decades as its history goes back to the late 1700s where women wore red ribbons around their necks during the French Revolution as a way to pay homage to those who had died at the guillotine. The late Princess Diana also notably wore her elegant variation of the choker, which shone in comparison to the ones on the necks of celebrities in the nineties such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
12 Bell-bottoms
Bell-bottom pants, which are trousers marked with a flare just below the knee, were most popular from their start in the 70s, lasting until the late 90s.
Hippies were most notorious of this look, with many pairing it with the tie-dye shirts and platform boots. This throwback style made its way onto the runways this past spring and summer, with designers such as Chanel, Coach and Hellessy making it fashionable for grown-ups everywhere to dust off their pairs hiding somewhere deep within their closets.
11 Baggy ripped jeans
The baggy jean trend has evolved into the popular trend of boyfriend jeans, which is a slouchy fit women often pair with white tees. It was the fashion brand, Dolce & Gabbana, which revived this style, making it cool again during the past spring and summer fashion season. They can be dressed up or down, with some fashion bloggers choosing to pair with heels or sneakers, t-shirts or blouses. In addition to baggy jeans are the ripped baggy jeans which can be dressed up for a night out or dressed down for a casual day.
10 Grunge
Grunge was all the rage in the nineties, with bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees dominating the punk, heavy-metal and rock & roll music scene. This style was a stark comparison to the hippie look, which was most popular during the 70s. While many people didn't refer to themselves as "grungers," many teens and adults took part in the style by wearing pleats, ripped jeans, flannel and other do-it-yourself (DIY) outfits.
Marc Jacob's 1992 Ellis Grunge Collection, filled with layered plaids, Doc Martens and sweaters, also reinforced the trend (and promptly got him fired). This style still remains a go-to, especially for fashion rebels like Kylie Jenner.
9 Embroidered jeans
Embroidered jeans were a popular trend in the nineties. They came in all sorts of styles, adding unique flair to normally boring blue jeans with its use of jewels, rhinestones, patches or sequins. The designs served to speak a lot about a person's personality, as it was entirely customizable. Individual's also developed their hand-stitching skills during those days as most designs were hand-done by the wearer themselves.
Now, in 2015, popular fashion brands reinventing this look include Guess, Moschino and Ètoile Isabel Marant.
8 Berry lips
With the fall season fast approaching, many women are already growing excited over all the dark, vampy colours they plan to pair with their layered scarves and knit sweaters. Many models rocked this look on the runways, as well as many celebs like Jessica Alba and Rihanna who swipe on this colour on the daily.
This look can be paired with simple eye makeup. Aside from berry lips, black and dark blue were also popular colours, ones which began the "goth" trends.
7 Calvin Klein underwear
Celebs like Mark Wahlberg (Marky Mark) and Kate Moss undeniably made wearing Calvin Klein underwear a sexy fashion trend in the '90s. Though it didn't come without controversy. In 1995, the brand's advertising campaign showed celebs and models posing provocatively. The ads were seen on television, print magazines, city buses and billboards. A Justice Department investigation opened after people claimed the ads much too inappropriate. The case was eventually dropped after it was confirmed that all the models were adults. Soon after, the brand pulled back the ads and released a full-page ad in the New York Times, stating that they were taken aback by all the controversy created by their ads being "misunderstood by some."
Despite this, the underwear has remained iconic, namely because of the famous celebrity and model endorsements. Even now in 2015, stars like Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas and Kendall Jenner have graced their advertisements, reviving the style and making it “cool” again.
6 Flannel
Flannel is one style that has remained relatively popular throughout the years, though it had its inception in the '90s. Back then, it was singers like Kurt Cobain who made flannel popular. Although he often looked as though he just rolled of bed and threw something on, his style was copied by many and only helped reinforce the "grunge look."
Now in 2015, it has been seen on the catwalk with designs from fashion designers and brands, Phillip Lim and Coach. Fashion bloggers have also revamped the look by tying the flannel shirts around their waist or wearing the fabric in oversized jackets.
5 Slip Dresses
Kate Moss and her slim-model physique made the slip dress a must for many women in the '90s. Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City dubbed hers the "naked dress," nineties "It Girl," Winona Ryder, wore many variations of the style and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy wore hers elegantly as a wedding dress.
According to Cosmopolitan.com, today's slip dress is softer, less clingy and sometimes pleated. Many women have paired it with strappy shoes, flat sandals, jacket or an oversized fringed cardigan.
4 Dr. Martens
This chunky, unisex style was seen as a fashion staple in the nineties. According to the brands official website, the design was created by a Munich-based Dr. Martens and his university friend, Dr. Funck. After an accident on a ski trip, they created the air-cushioned sole, only to then join forces with the Griggs, a British shoe-making family. The shoes began selling in the 1960s, although they didn't reach their peak in popularity until the nineties.
In Miley Cyrus's infamous, "Wrecking Ball" video, she wore a reddish-brown pair. They were hard not to notice as they were some of the few articles of clothing she wore in the video, but it pulled her simple style together in 2015, while giving a nod to the nineties. Other stars who have all worn the boots include Jessica Alba, Gwen Stefani and Drew Barrymore.
3 Bandanas
It was the late rapper Tupac who made this style one to steal in the '90s. Both men and women wore it, with the scarf-like fabric being used on hair, on wrists, accessorizing their backpacks or hanging around their necks. Aside from Tupac, many stars made this look popular, including Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Madonna.
Nowadays, Miley Cyrus is a big fan of the bandana, as is Rihanna, Rita Ora, Beyonce and Selena Gomez who have been photographed wearing it as part of a retro look.
2 Long hair
With man buns being extremely popular right now, it's no wonder that the trend of long hair has men everywhere skipping their trip to the hairdresser. Celebs like Kurt Cobain, Brad Pitt and many rockers during this time rocked the long hair style.
While many of these same stars have since cut their hair as they got older, some celebs are still rocking it in 2015. Notable examples of this include Jared Leto, the handsome Chris Hemsworth and Charlie Hunnam.
1 Crop Tops
While the Jenner sisters may be the constant wearers of crop tops in in 2015, they had their hay day in the '90s. Many stars, singers especially, owned this barely-there style. Britney Spears notoriously being one of them, as she donned one almost anytime she performed. This was especially prominent in her music video for her hit single, "Hit Me Baby One More Time."
The midriff-revealing style has remained popular to this day, though these "belly shirts" as they were commonly referred to as, were rather awkward looking back then as most celebs paired them with normal clothing. Nowadays, with most stars showing skin, the style fits in more. Kim Kardashian often pairs it with high-waisted skirts and Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift are also frequent wearers.
